Hello

We all agree that soft water between 60-100ppm is soft enough
for breeding Discus.

Question if your tap, well is soft to start with, what method do you find
best to harden your water for your grow outs.

People add a mix of Magnesium sulphate, gypsum and . . . Dottie help - LOL, what is the mix and ratio?

I use a product called RO Vital by Marc Weiss Companies. There are other products out there that will do the same thing. Check you LFS or go online and look at water additives.

I use Kent RO Right for hardness and Ph Stable for buffer

I am not Dottie but ill post the mix lol. :)

3 grams Calcium Sulfate
1gram Calcium Chloride
1gram Magnesium Sulfate

Calcium Sulfate is gypsum and is available at chemical supply.

Calcium Chloride is sea salt-- available at chemical supply or pet store-- get the finely ground type so as to dissolve easier.

Magnesium Sulfate is merely Epsom salt and is available just about anywhere.

Works like a charm for me. ;)

Carol and Ronald...I find myself in new location with water that is
343uS on the meter, which is 186.05ppm hardness. That is between
growout and breeding. The formula should be easy to put together, but
is there some recommended amount based on what you already have?
I don't remember the recommended hardness for growout, I think 300+.
I have 60 gal aging barrels. Ph out of the tap is around 8.35. Don't plan
on doing anything with the ph but hardness is a must.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Butch :)

I use R/O and add back then.
I set my water to a conductace of around 300.
I tested how much the conductace rises when I use 1,1,3. In my case I think 70 per 40gal. So I use about 3 or 4 * 1,1,3. I got used to make it every time I need it with a kitchen scale. Some others eyeball it :D .
For growouts it is said that calcium is important.

hth
