I'm feeding ground beef, 93% lean, available at your local supermarket under the Excel brand. It gets mixed 50/50 with pollack, which is the cheapest fish around. However, the ground beef alone also works. Its leaner than beefheart.

Willie. How long you been doing that?
Never heard of that brand here.
Just buy the leanest you can get I guess.
I'll have to look at package today.
Wonder if they show the protein content?
Do you feel they grow as fast or the same as beef heart?
Any other meat you or anyone else using?

Willie how are you mixing your beef with fish?

Our local supermarket chain, Cub Foods, carries the Excel brand. Its ground beef that comes in 4 - 5 grades, ranging from 15% fat to 6% fat. I buy the 93/7 grade, which is 7% fat max. It comes in 3 lb logs so its easy to cut. Since its ground beef, there's no further grinding.

I do a 50/50 mix with frozen pollack, which is the cheapest marine fish around. Microwave the pollack to thaw it, then toss it into the food processor with the ground beef. Sometimes I'll throw in some frozen veggies, whatever is on sale. The whole thing costs me $3/lb. I can prepare 12 lb of frozen food in less than an hour.

I've done beefheart for a long time and got sick and tired of the cleaning and the blood... When you grind the 93/7 beef, the mixture is less greasy than 100% cleaned beefheart.

The fish don't really notice any difference.

I made my usual beefheart mix (vitamins, spinach, flake food, etc.) only I used turkey breasts instead of beefheart. Then I mix it up with the beefheart. They seem to love the variety.

I am also using 93% ground beef instead of BH (I learned it from Willie). I tried but I do not like adding fish into my ground beef as it makes it floot longer in the water before sinking into the bottom. I added vitamins, calcium, and fish oil into the beef. If I am correct, protain is a good sources of amino acids which are essential for adding size to the fish. However, protein is not a good source of energy. Fish oil provides unsatuated fatty acid to the beef mix which is more easy to be broken down to release energy.
