This discus is way too young to spawn. You're looking at another 7 - 9 months.

and generally speaking males are larger than females. looks for spawning tubes for a sure fire way to tell male from female. or just watch to see who lays eggs and who fertilizes.

Can you please enlighten us on the aprox size of the fish? I would say its too young to spawn too. Plus sometimes you have the tip of the breeding tube down but that means nothing. You need to see the full tube extended for a sure way of sexing discus.
Males do tend to be larger than females. Almost 90% of the pairs pictured on this site prove this factor.
I would say its probably eaten alot. has it been having normal bowel movements ?? It could simply be constipation.

Your Discus look stunted, it may be older than it looks.

If you measure the diameter of the eye, it is 1/3 the width of the head. In a high quality fish, the diameter of the eye would range from 1/6 to 1/8th the width of the head. The eye grows even if the body does not, so a large eye is indicative of stunting -- regardless of the size of the fish.

Don't worry about stunting. Just learn to raise a few batches of discus, learn to pick good ones, and learn to buy from a high quality source. Most of all, you need a lot of patience. Its going to take a while. In the meantime, you can try to treat this fish well and hope that it will reach 4".

Steven,

Willie couldn't have said it any better. Your Discus undersize doesn't mean
that the offsprings will be small too. As for the Discus that are showing
some bowing behavior they may be ready to spawn. I would suggest seperating the bowing pair from the rest of the Discus by placing a divider in the aquarium, if they are a confirm pair remove the other Discus in another
aquarium.

Good Luck!
Cliff
