I have 2 canister filters on my tank (2217 and 2213) and I want to start cleaning them. I know that i replace the chemipures and the ehfisynth, but I am not so sure how to clean the rest of the media. I know you rise the media out with tank water, but do you seperate each media and place them into buckets with tank water? Do I just run a lot of tank water through the three layers, of the filter, and out the intake? I also noticed the filter pad was a little ragged, can I change that also or will that hurt my bacteria? Can I clean the large filter the same day I do a water change?

The best time to clean your filters is when you do a water change, simply because the water you drain can be put in a bucket for you to rinse your bio media. The coarse pads can be reused as long as they are not clogged up, the fine ehfisynth pad should be rinsed as much as you can, and replaced every month. Unless your water has impurities, I would ditch the chemipures.
