Kelvin has asked me to find him a couple of the hand held guns that read temperature. You point it at the tank and it tells you the temperature of the water. Are they sold at Lowes or Radio Shack? What is its actual name?

I don't know about Lowe's or Radio Shack, but this site has them.

I bought a pH meter from them.

Carol they are called infrared temperature guns. If you go on EBay you can find a few using the words infrared gun to give you an idea of what the are. Prices are not bad ($45.00) compared to the $300.00 ones I use to use in the automotive repair shops to check your catalytic converter for proper operation. Have Kelvin look them over.

Thanks :)

You're very welcome, I've learned so much from you, I'm glad I can begin to return the favor.

I was told by a manufacturer of those that they would give false readings if pointed at glass, something to do with the reflection, and if a temp reading needs to be made on a pipe that is new and shiny they recomend wrapping an area of the pipe with a tape or something simmilar that is dull in appearance before taking a reading.

Carol,

I had one at the ACA and we used it to check the tanks there. I know Kelvin liked using it.

You can check out some specs at Grainger and find out the one you want. I'll pass on my discount if you find one you like.

Hey folks,

I am into Radio control cars and we use these temp guns to check the temp of our motors. They can be bought at almost any Remote control hobby shop. I use the ones from tempgun.com

They run from 25.00 to 45.00 and I have been useing mine for over a year now with no problems. You just have to point it at the water surface and it gives an exact temp. It works great, you can check all your tanks in just a few seconds and when doing water changes it is easy to check the temp as it is going in. tempgun started out useing these for checking the temp on reptiles. Pretty cool huh.

Hope that helps,
Jason

I got mine from Jim Shedden about three yrs ago..works sweet, but yes you do have to point it in the water, not through the glass.
