They have eaten some.. They are watching us closely :)
One of them has a bad pelvic fin.. Its smaller than the other one, and it doesnt look like the fish uses it.. hopefully this will get better in time.

Sorry about the overdue reply
Thank you all for the nice comments on my fish.
I think the heckels are rio negro, but thats just a guess.
My tank has been real busy lately, suddenly they all reached puberty I guess. I now have 5 females, of 11 fish total, laying eggs every week, but only 3 of them have mates of their own. My red turk must be enjoying life right now, he has 3 females trying to impres him all day long. Once while he and his chosen mate was going at it, another female started laying eggs 10cm from them and she wanted him to fertilise her eggs too :)
So because of this fighting and chaos I sold a few of the Heckels, keeping the biggest one offcourse ;)

Next week I will get some spawning tanks, there are some really neat Brilliant turk/solid turk pairs, which I believe would make some beautifull offspring.

My pleco 6-7 inches.

I love the photos of your heckels, I would love to try my hand at a wild strain sometime, and have had my eye on heckels. unfortunately they are quite hard to come by where i live at. Great looking pictures, good luck with the recent spawnings. josh

I had to sell most of the heckels because they were chased a lot, but I kept the biggest one, I will see if I can get a picture of it soon, its turning out really nice and getting a beautifull red in the dorsal fin. The heckel is hiding most of the time now, because of the blue pair protecting their eggs :)

I want to get more wilds some day, but I love my domestics too much to sell them

They are doing pretty well for first time parents, the fry have been moved to a driftwood and they are strugling to keep the little ones controlled.
This picture from today reminds me of "Three Billy Goats Gruff". I have a troll in my tank :D

Martin,

I really really like the fish on the last picture. Is it blue or blue turq?
Such a beautiful shape, I can't find a fish with that quality where I live.
Did you get it as an adult?
Very very nice fish, like some of the pictures from Bernd Degen's book.
Thank you for sharing.

The male is a brilliant turq, he's the one with yellow eye. The female is solid turq .
I bought them all as 5-6 cm.
And this is today :D :D
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/1710/ungs6id.jpg

It is amazing how well they handle the fry, since its their first time and they are in a 1.6m long tank. I saw the male fetching runners from the other side of the tank, he must have great eyes.
My tank is a mess now, I have the lights on at night and the algae LOVE it :(

a picture from today. Its a joy to watch these fellas grow larger every day.
I have started cleaning their tank again, still need some spots, but I dont want to disturb them more then I have to.
