Not sure if this sis the right place for this post.......... Maybe we need a HARDWARE DISCUSSION area?

I just picked up a 55 and a 29 that i need to get setup and was wondering what the best size heaters would be for these tanks.

On hand i have a couple of visa-therm submersibles.

1- 50 watt
1- 75 watt
1- 150 watt

I guess for safety sake i should have 2 in each tank with a low enough wattage not to cook the fish if they locked on so what size should go in each tank?

And where are the best deals at for heaters?

I was getting ready to place an order at drs foster & smith to take advantage of the free shipping so if its only a matter of a dollar or 2 difference i'll just order from them.

I was also thinking about just getting all new ones .......... maybe the stainless or titanium heaters. Is there a big difference in price?

I also was gonna order some of the OXYGEN PLUS BIO FILTERS at the same sight instead of the Hydor filters since this site doesnt seem to carry them. Are they just as good??

Thanx in advance

These look comparably priced to the visatherms and would probably look great in the 55. I also like the dial on the outside for easy adjustments too.

I have both Visitherm and RenaCal Top Excel submersible heaters and they both work really well. The Rena Cal is a bit expensive but you can get a good price at Petsmart if you one close by. Don't pay their store price. Go online at:
http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_list.jsp?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302 023693&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030114&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776791&bmUID=1135299365182

Print out the online price sheet for which ever one you want and the store will honor its online price very happily. The Visitherm heater is about $15.99 for a 150W capacity.

Hey Cage,
If you get the visa therm, let me know how it works out for you. I like the outside dial too! I have seen those around lfs but didn't really know anything about them.

Awesome news on the 2 new tanks!! Pics please!!!

Dual temps do not go up high enough for discus tanks. I don't like via aqua either. I have not found a reliable heater, so just buy lots of on sale, submersible heaters that go above 92F

Visi-Therms go up to around 90f and are ok, I like Trionics and Hydor's as they go higher. The Hydors are great cos when you do a water change you can let them get out of the water, they auto shut down. As ageneral rule I use 1 watt per 10 litres so for US gallons that 4 watts a gallon. so for a 29g thats 4x29 or 100W as near as damn is to swearing. for the 55 around 200W.
As Carol says keep spares!! A friend has just borrowed one from me as both of his have broken!!
All the best,
Paul.

Exactly Carol!! That has been my problem getting a heater that goes past 88 to 93 degrees, is submersable, 200watts, and shatterproof!....I did however, just order on line, from Pets Mart, 2 Visa Thermi, something like that, submersable, 200watts, and a great price, not 34 bucks! But it didnt say how far the temp can go, so I called customer service and they told me to 100 degrees!!! We shall see, as I ordered three of them....

She was certain they went to 100 degrees, but some how I would not be surprised if I end up sending them back becuz they dont!
