Sponge above water line?

I'm running a Aqua Clear 110 (biggest one). I have 2 of the foam sponges inside. One is sticking above the water line. Is it worth it to keep it in there, sticking above, or just have one sponge in there and that one stays under the water level?

I also have 3 hydro sponges in the tank also. Thanks guys/gals.:)
