Hello, I'm still in the planning stages of my new 75g. I have wanted to set up a discuss tank for a while, but have decided in favor of an Amazon type aquarium.
My question is would it be possible to keep 2 discuss in my 75 gallon. I plan on having it moderately planted, and it will only contain very peacefull tankmates. Could I get away with this? The temp. could be at 79 F with soft water ( planning on anyway) Would I still have to do bi-weekly water changes? Will it be to hard to clean up their mess with a sand bottom? I will try to get adualts, from what I've heard on this forum they are rather easier than Juvies.
What to you think?

Hi,
Discus are a schooling fish and do best in groups of 5 or 6 or more.

Wc's needed depend on bioload, but discus like clean water, low in nitrates.

When I have discus I change water usually 50% per day.

If I added them to the tank once it was established with bacteria and plants, do you think I could cut down on the water changes? Say 10% twice a week? Do adualt dicus still need to be kept in groups of 5+?

Sly,

If you keep one per 15 and have adequate filtration you can get away with 25% weekly water changes.

The more the better... In a 75 if you pull 5 gallons a day and 20 on the weekend you should be doing very well.

Again, the more WC's the better.

That I could do, I have a trash can filled with aged water, a heater, etc... What about the temp, could I get away with 80 F?

IME 80f is too low minimum I would suggest is 82 with personally 86f preferred, just my opinion though!

I have a 55g and soon to be 100g tall I do two 30% a week most of the time when not busy with school. my water is 86f and my other tank is 83f trying to get the heaters to match one another. The other day my first discus tankw as right at 90f i find it neevr bother my angels or discus back in the day. Once I saw it at 90 i jumped in a changed it. I find as you mature as a discus lover you will find things that work for you. Ever one and every fish is different. No ones consistant with the discus. what I mean by consistint no one does the act same thing they do similar but not exact.

IMO 80 degrees F is way too low... downright cold for Discus.

I keep mine at 88 cause they seem to prefer that, but 86 is probably the more common. You should set the heat as high as the plants will allow... whether that's 84 or 86 I'm not sure (I have no live plants, just driftwood).

Discus will survive quite well in 90 degree water... 80 is questionable though.

86 F is the optimum temp, IMO....

I find 86 is the best to mine dont complain or change color unless its being chased. So 86 is the avarage i find people telling me and in books. You will work out all the fine details because something different will work for you then everyone else. Thats what i find out everyone does everyhting different. good luck.

82-84 for breeding and 85-88 for others. Thats my vote!
