Hello,

Does anyone have any experience not using overhead lighting? I'm running a 55 barebottom and it gets a fair amount of indirect sunlight everyday through an East facing window. The discus seem to prefer the muted lighting. I tried putting a shop light over the tank but they were more apt to hide even after several weeks. I'd like to use the tank for a breeder down the road so this is probably the best of both worlds for my situation.

Back in our apartment there was a ton of indirect light and I kept the fluorescents off quite a bit in the Spring, Summer and Autumn.

In the winter when there is less light I used the fluorescents.

My personal opinion is that most discus look better under natural lighting - though this is certainly not practical in most cases. My 180 gallon now is in my dark living room and I have to use artificial lighting.
