Chin up Marie. Once we gain the knowledge and experience.. this may not be to bad. For me... I dont let anything beat me. Especially not a fish lol. If I can have two children, if I can fall off a horse, land on a rock and nearly break my hip, but get back up (with help) and get back on (with help) and keep riding, I can get this discus thing. Come on hun, you know you love the challenge. Shoot... discus should be easy after YOUR job!

Why we have discus is a question as old as the sun and moon,,, okay maybe not that old...probably goes back to early civilzation... but its no mystery...people have always looked for ways to occupy their time....Discus simplified that.....

When you keep discus, you don't need to worry so much about finding multiple things to occupy your time...You trade that "multiple" for a single ....really its a no Brainer:) Life is so much easier knowing what you can spend your free time on.;) :)

oh and if you are a discus forum owner such as myself...you use it to help justify why you have a discus forum to help people occupy more of their time:)

LOL, I used to have more problems (knock on wood) before I kept discus!

I wasn't satisfied with the fish I kept before them. My tank was still missing something. Other fish just swam and ate and wasn't filling in the space. Then after talking to someone who kept discus, I thought, maybe I should give it a try? and the rest is history. They keep me from impulse fish buying since I don't want to get them sick, and they greet me each morning and evening when I come up to their tanks. Heck, they even have staring contests with my son! These definitely aren't swimming/eating machines they are feeling and thinking and just all around beautiful animals.

I think I spend more time lookin at the forum than my discus LMAO...

Why do we keep em ???

Well I really don't know and when I find myself doing my daily water change after a hard day at work, I seriously ask myself the same damn question "why discus??"

And everytime I find myself putting off buying an amplifier for my guitar, I ask myself the same question "why discus??"

They havent mastered me, they have enslaved me...

Cuz we are all    !!!!!!!

But, even acknowledging that, one must admit they are one gorgeous animal (& I am certainly an animal person) & bring a lot of pleasure into our lives. Guess we just have to find that balance that keeps it being a pleasure, hence the multiple posts 'bout finding the answer to "automation" to help us keep the balance!!! Dottie

I start to have discus because my marriage life with two children is not stressing enough. I need more stress, sleepless nights and fighting with my wife (verbally) to make life more stressful.

About fighting with my wife, it is true.

You guys are the lucky ones. I feel like I only get visitation rights for my discus, as they are at my girlfriends house while mine gets remodeled. I can't wait to bring them back to my place and just spoil them rotten!

Marie: Thanks for the nice feedback. I just wanted to cheer ya up =]

I have been asking myself this same question A LOT lately. They do take up so much of my time, and I get the guilts. I often think of all the other things I could be doing if I didn't have discus. And I only have 11 of them! I don't know how people with more than that do it. If I didn't have to work a full time job it'd be no problem at all.

But, yes...they are surely beautiful. I feel like I have come too far now to hang up my hoses, but I do think about it.:(

When I first get in the door from work, Discus in the grow out tank and Sampson and Goliath see me and line up at top to be fed (even have their dorsal fins above water). lot of times I drop everything and give them their dinner (the theme song of JAWS running through my head, LOL). (the breeders are too busy to notice me at first, LOL).

I'll take your problems away, just ship me the discus(I'll even pay the shipping costs). After you get over the hump of having to spend so much time caring for the fish it becomes like brushing your teeth. If I didn't breed discus I would just waste my time doing something else.

LOL Marie...the meds I'm getting daily for another 5 days and then I go back to an oral taper on same class of pills..if they up em anymore I'll go crazier than I already am...lmao..hence the reason for my discus...and to be sure Marie she(the nurse) is almost as pretty as you are in your pic so I'd have to say yes it's a very good thing:)

We don't - they have us...

In fact, if you could add up every minute that I've spent gazing at my discus here would be my emotional percentage breakdown of that time...

Happy - 10%
Contented - 10%
Anxious - 48%
Confused - 15%
Frustrated - 15%
Sad - 2%

Hmm...

They are absolutely the most beautiful of the fresh water fish . IMO.
BUT, there are things in life which tests our character, our patience levels, our perseverence. Discus are one of those things. Ive felt like throwing in the towel a couple times, but the trials we go through make us stronger in the end.
