I got seven new Discus today of the Pigeon Blood variety. Five came from one LFS and two Checker Board came from another. the five I'm not sure of the type. If you can help here, thanks. Here is some photos of the little guys that are about 1.5". The photos are not as clear as I would like them to be, but they give an idea of what they are.

Hi,

The pics aren't real clear but they all look like pigeon blood strains...may be marlboro reds?! Maybe other members have a better idea.

I'm onna try to get better pics done. The one that have no black on them are called Checkered Board. The other, I don't know.

no offense, but this is why i don't buy discus from LFS. They're overpriced, football-shaped discus.

You found them to be football shaped?? So where do you get your fish from??

A lot of people get their fish from local breeders, or you can look for other breeders that can ship fish to you.

I have to agree that they are football shaped, and look stunted, but they will be good for you, in that you'll be learning how to take care of discus. That way if you get really high quality discus in the future, you will know what to expect.

Good luck with them, and don't worry too much about their shape etc. Have fun and learn all you can.

Goheel,

I think at 1.5" they are almost always that shape. Dont start to round up well until a bit older, IMHO. My pigeon didnt get REAL round until he was about 3". Now he is a great specimen. Lost alot of the peppering, too, as he gets bigger.
Goodluck Riche Guy! more pics, please!

I figured their body shapes are not reflective of their older siblings. If they were then I would say they are stunted. They are still quite young. I will agree though that the five I got from the LFS perhaps had slowed down their growth, but I think with care they will continue on their way to increasing in size. They are already exhibiting their pecking order.

The reason I thought they might be stunted is because their eyes look big in proportion to their body size... but I could easily be wrong.

Well I think at this point it would be best just to let them grow a little more and then we will see.

Thanks for your input.
