Here is a series of pictures I took earlier today of two Curipera, the male is the striated one and the female the deep red.

This is a new pairing of some I have had a while so I am anxious to see how it goes. At the moment the female is focused on the eggs, but not the male which is not a good sign. However it may take a couple of tries.

I took them from a distance shooting between two tanks.

Yes, you never know, I got that one from Mario back in 1985, it is from Germany.

I am planning to get some plants in pots and shove them into some of the tanks too.

Well I thank all of you for your very kind comments and interest. When I caught them in the act I just figured I could shoot a quick series since it could be of interest to some of the newer hobbyists.

As of the moment, there are a few fungused eggs which does not concern me as I am more hopeful since the two are not challenging each other to care for the eggs, which has resulted in seperation among new pairings in the past. I would be pleased if they continued their non combative behaviour until some wrigglers appear or all the eggs go bad. Then they can try again.

Bob.

Well, this pairing has made it to the wriggler stage.

I took this series within the last 20 minutes. They are trying to decide who is going to care for them, and these pictures were all taken 5 to 10 seconds apart.

I may have to step in and help them decide.........I don't know yet since I am anxious to see fi they can work it out amicably.

Well, here we are a couple of days later and the proud parents are sharing the responsibility of rearing the young, at least to this point. I have found that wild caught discus, are often exceptional parents, exibiting greater defensive characteristics than some domestics.

Here the female is exchanging the fry with the male.

Hi Bob,
Thats great news on the pair and very cool pics as well!. :) I'm curious on something with them... How long have you had these fish ? and when they came to you were they already colored up and pretty much adults? Reason I ask is one of the 2...the solid red one., female.. The sides of the fish look "wrinkled" I have seen that a few time and just attributed it to old age.

any thoughts are welcome.

Hi Al,

I have had these Curipera about 2 1/2 years. This female has had these marks since then. As a comparison here is two more from the same group which I have managed to repaired, they have just completed their first spawn too. You will see that this pair is of exceptional quality, at least in my opinion.

This was an interesting experience, they spawned but immediately began competing to care for the eggs, but without actually fighting and causing injury. As such I left both parents with the spawn for experience and was happy to see that although, in the end there were only two wrigglers they moved and cared for them for a day. This bodes well for future spawns.

Here is a series taken last week showing their spawning etc.
