How do you make your discus eat flakes? I have some left over from a long time ago.

I have found that flakes are the most readily taken food I feed so I'm surprised your discus won't eat them. I wouldn't feed the flakes it they are really old, just buy some fresh flakes. Try making it the first meal of the day and see if they'll take it. If not then starve them for a day and try again the next morning, this usually will work

I thought they're consider good if it's unopen. There's no experation date on it and if you buy it from the pet store how do you know if it's fresh or old?

I would do like already suggested.....feed them the flakes first thing in the morning every morning. They will get hungry and start nibbling on them and eventually should eat flakes. We order our flakes by the lb and keep them in the refrigerator. I would think if the bag is unopened they should be alright. Now if they are like 3 years old LOL I wouldn't use them.

I like to put around four different types of flakes in my Beefheart mix.

Try to buy your flakes online not from LFS.

Much better deal.

If the flakes are left over from a long time ago, you may want to consider buying fresher flakes. I think flakes have a fairly good shelf life, but you never know.

I feed my fish Omega One flakes, and they eat it with no problem. I've also had success with Ocean Nutrition flakes in the past as well as with my LFS's own label of flakes. (The LFS said they are the same quality as Tetra flakes, which I haven't fed in a long time.)

Guys, what brand of flakes did your use for your fish , I bought omega one for my juvies and dicovered that the flakes are big, do i need to slightly crush it down to size before feeding? regarding 1977's suggestion of starving technique as a way of acclimating fish to eat flakes, if my fish wont touch it on my first try, do i remove the flakes from the tank after five minutes or do i just leave it to sink into the tank then syphon out any uneaten food in the evening then try again the next morning?

I use tetra spirulina, my discus love it. Flakes are big and I do crush them before I feed them.

I would not leave the food in there for the whole day, if they haven't eaten it on the initial drop, they probably won't eat it at all. Plus, you'll have more wastes adding to the pollution of your water. Syphon out after 10 minutes or so if they don't eat. Repeat process for a few days. That should get them going.

I've found my fish love Ocean Nutrition flakes, particularly the Formula One and Brine Shrimp Plus. The Formula One flakes are HUGE, so I usually break them while feeding - find this preferable though to the food that comes in small flakes.. the fish are big enough for the large flakes, and easier on feeding and tank cleaning.

Its funny to watch my fish eat the flakes! They all love the Ocean Nutrition One flakes, I put some broke up, and leave some big. It's like watching a kid eat spaghetti, they grab one end and suck it in!!

This is the 3rd day since i got my fish. They don't really like the flakes I gave them. Its call Tetra Fin (Flake Food For All Goldfish). The red plastic container. I remember when I got this, it was 15 years ago. I know what you guys are going to say, don't use it, throw it away. I already stop using it.

I'm glad you stopped using it;) Also, flake food for goldfish is different from tropical fish flakes.
