A Few months ago I took my of Discus pairs and gave them a Rest...They just didn't seem to be interested in each other any more..... at the same time I spend a bit of time talking with Ryan Smith here about Angels..... and of course theres our other forum Simplycichlids.com

Anyhow... discus were not behaving... so I thought "oh what the heck" why not breed some angels.... I had at that point some wild altums, many wild scalare, and one line of cool Zebras I have been working with a few years now.... but I never really dedicated alot of tanks..

1 pair turned to 2...to 8 and the occasional tank of frys turned to about 600 gals of fry.

So if you are wondering about what happens when a Discus nut rests his pairs and raises Angels.. heres a glimpse!

hope you like the pics..and PLEASE do let know if you are looking for domestic or wild scalare!:)

-al

Ps..Thanks Ryan! and oh yes...Thanks Kenny for the pair of Albinos!:)

Al,

I love the pics of the tank! The closeups make me want angels again. Will have to wait tho until my planted project gets more underway and settled. I dont like to have more than one change at a time since you cant tell what may cause a problem and identify it.
It sux having one tank. But better one than none!!!!! Just cant get hubby to allow more since I was a tank junky in our old home. :D

THey are really great and keep posting pics. I will keep you in mind when I am ready for the angels!!!

Al, I love pics 10 to 13 and also the zebra spotted. They sure do have bigger spawns than discus, don't they? Between you and Ryan, you two have got people thinking about getting some angel tanks set up. And they will know where to get them from, too!!:sun:

And Marilyn, tomorrow is Mother's Day. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_15_45.gif And whether you have children or not, you also are a mother to your discus. So I think a perfect present would be a new tank!! And then you can get some angels!

Its funny how Ryan and I have been pretty much over-run with this little guys the past few months!

I have more pics to post latter... I have a beautiful pair of albino angels I got from Loverboy...aka Kenny..and have a nice set of fry from them as well!

:-) what a few pairs can turn into Al...Angels heaven!!!

I had the same situation when I was breeding mine...it really got outta hand(or should I say tanks lol) FAST FAST FAST...

Trust me Al I had a similar situation...

Kenny's Discus
05-13-2006, 05:03 PM
But the discus wasn't even bothered with like 500 angels frys swimming around them. They were smaller than yours though...

Thanks for sharing your pics Al.

Take care,
Kenny

Hi Kenny,
My Albino Pair has given me some fry that look remarkably like yours!:) They are a beauties to be sure! By the way... They are raising some fry on their own....not many...40-50.. I screened the eggs and once they were wigglers...They seem okay..as soon as the wigglers left the screen, the parents moved them to the top of the sponge...I'm hopeful!, but if things don't go well, she lays like clockwork!:)

Thanks for looking, and for that cool albino pair! :)

Tina,
Those angels are something I have been working on for a few years now.... Some of those are destined to be crossed back to wild scalares, others I'll continue on with the line. They are a beautiful fish and really a "beefy" angel. I see alot of angels that are just small and weak looking... These ones are nice and strong, and the fins are long with an irridescent bluish green...The ones in the picture are still very young...they were only born in august of 2005...and are just starting to pair up...

The "spotteds" are related to the above line as well.

Have to stress, I am not an angel fish genetics guy... I only know what seems to work with the above to get what I want to see... At this point I am crossing based on "likeX like" should give me more of what I Like!;) :) I am enjoying the recent angel fry explosion here as its giving me alot of insight on angel fish genetics...but I have much to learn and am relatively a novice in this area.

Marie.. If I'm not mistaken.. thats part of being albino. So no it would not be flash.. its what their eyes look like. Most albino anythings have red eyes like that. I know in birds they say they can have eye trouble sometimes because of it. My lutino cockatiel has red eyes like that. Its very similar to albino as far as birds go. Albino horses have crazy eyes!

Ryan

In a couple weeks Al is getting some more. I've already hand-picked a few for him :) Then he will have some smokey babies to raise up and cross to his wilds (or his leopards, that might be a neat cross).

Ryan

Ryan,
I can't wait! I have only one smokey here...A large old male. Looking forward to raising some of yours ...the parents are beauties! Speaking of wilds... That pair of scalare is picking at the cone...so maybe I will have some F1 wilds soon..with luck.

Paul,
Its insane here with angels...they love my tap water..that pair that spawned all those fryin the 125gal tank, are raising a batch of 2 week olds now..not so many this time..maybe 200-250!:)
Now if my Altums would only follow suit!

Al - I hear you and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Hope they can raise some babies this time! In the past I didn't give the parents much chances and only bred them artificially...maybe you are more patience than I was...Thanks again Al.

Marie - Amber is correct in that the red pupils are trait of the albino. It's not because of the flash of the camera.

Barb - thanks for liking my picture of the angels and discus.

Tina - more TANKS TANKS TANKS......lol

If I can sell these few fish first. I have no room right now and dont want to further overload an already cramped area. Let me know when exactly and If I have sold mine by then I would love to get some of those awesome angels since they could go into QT anyways. I used to have angels a while back until an unfortunate heater accident and until recently when I got my albinos, I forgot how much I like angels also. They are very pretty fish, easier to keep and breed than discus and make a nice addition to a discus tank. My 3 albinos are almost as big as the sub discus. They are huge and they are eating machines. Hopefully I will get a pair from these 3 and then I can just swap because angels have large batches, lol.
