Hmmm......How bout the time they told me that those little discus they had weren't stunted, they were dwarf discus, hadn't I ever heard of that? Then look at me like I'm stupid or something!! Hahahahahaha!

OK, how about the guy who told me daily wc's would kill my fish. Or the pet store I walked into one day and found a tank with a betta, some small firemouths, swordtails, Yellow Tail Damsels and a Coral Beauty. Yes folks. You too can keep salt and fresh water fish in the same tank. Just buy a packet of Miracle Stuff, add to your FW tank, then add saltwater fish.
I was told by a tech at Kordon that discus actually need around 74F degree temp just like most tropicals. People think they need higher temps because when they were first descovered it was late in the dry season and they were in small ponds with water that was 80+F. People have been passing around the same wrong information ever since.

...once at a LFS ... saw 2 tanks full of discus either dying, starving or gasping for air and a sign that said, "new imported discus". I noticed that the tanks were in a central system...same water for all fishes, which was too cold to begin with. So I tried to advise them about water parameters, quarantine, etc & they told me; " don't worry, they are from Asia, they swim like that for a couple of days & then they are fine"

I, too, was told by a LFS that daily water changes would kill my fish. I offered to sell them some angels and they told me that they couldn't take them, because if I'd been doing daily w/c my fish were probably stressed and weak and wouldn't be able to take the added stress of transporting to the store and acclimating to their tanks.

Then she said, "It's a shame though because the system here is a really stable one and we don't have to change water everyday to keep our fish in good shape. I'm sure you probably have nice angels."

I won't be going back there.

Funny.. well.. NOT, but.. my daughter has a community tank that I bought her a few years ago. The water only gets changed if/when I get to the point where I feel guilty NOT doing it (those poor poor fish  ) SHE had been told the same thing, and asked me once... only once :D .. if my changing the water might not be the reason her fish got sick

That it was OK in the store to mix the discus, the other ones that looked bad were not contagious! :p

But Jim, he explained in very technical terms how the Miracle Stuff registered as salt only to the saltwater fish, but the freshwater fish couldn't tell there was anything in the water at all.
Ryan, I know how frustrating it can be dealing with the fish store guys who just know everything. I like to get back at them by telling their customers that they don't need the Algea Killer and Tank Water Clarifier.
