Here are some pictures of my first discus. I have only had these for a month and already I want to go out and buy another tank. I now they are not the best shape, (I wish I found this web site before I bought them). I plan on returning the Blue Diamond and the Marlboro Red to my LFS. Blue Diamond locks stunted and has bad shape. And the Marlboro Red I believe has been color treated; I guess it’s what’s called a FAKE Marlboro Red. What do you think? All comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.
Also, dose any one know of a reputable breeder in the Sacramento Ca, area?

JDH,
To my eyes they all look stunted. The tip off is the large eyes, and still very football shaped bodies. There are a ton of breeders near you and in the Bay Area. Look at the iTrader section of this site and you will find many.

Congrats on the first discus. Yeah, they may be a little stunted and oddly shaped and all, but they'll make good pets. With a good food and and regular waterchanges, you might be able to get a little more growth out of them.

I'm not sure about sacramento, but i know there are quite a couple of breeders in the SF bay area. There are also a couple of LFS's in that area that specialize in discus like Sunrisetropicals and Fairylake. If you can, go down and pick out your own discus.

Cheers

JDH,
Marc is right and I apologize, at least they're discus! The RT is actually not a bad looking fish at all and I'm sure the others will give you enjoyment too.

I think they'll be ok. When you take pics of them the eyes are what the camera focuses on so it'll tend to be more sharper. The eyes always seem to be bigger in pictures than in real life. Like they say the camera will add 10 lbs on you.. same can be said about the eyes..:D

Hi jdh21cali - no offense to anyone(especially you Larry lol) since we're all entilted to our opinion. But if you like those discus, that's what it counts.

I personally think they'll be ok with frequent WCs and nutrious food. I'm just gonna be honest with you, none of those look like they'll be future champions of Discus Shows; but so are most of our fish. I guess what I'm trying to say is that aside from culls, IMO no discus are truly PERFECT, and no discus are really GARABGE either. And I don't think yours are culls...they look healthy to me.

Take care, just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replies. I know none of them are show quality fish the BD, RT, and the fake Marlboro, I bought from a local fish store. The Red pigeon checkerboard and the Golden yellow I bought from Samson, at Universal Discus. I was hopping they were of better quality, science I have heard some good thing about his fish. I know more now on what to look for, so hopefully my next few fish will be of better quality.

I like the range of colours, I feel like I'm looking at a rainbow. Funny to think they all look brown in the wild and are transformed via man into those neat colours. See, it's not just one big step for mankind, it's a big step for discuskind too.
