As everyone knows research is important...
I have been researching and came up with a few helpful sites:

Met fan, I would love to have time to play with a planted Discus tank. Right now with 20+ bb tanks I have no time. However, that being said, I would be a little leary if they can only grow out Discus to 8" in a planted tank and they have seen 10-12" Discus in breeders tanks  . Only 12"ers... I would like to see a pic with a real tape measure :p ! A real breeder should get 14"ers in the first 9 months...easy!!!!! (jk) lmaorotf!

I have had a planted tank for a few years with play sand from home depot. Plants grow extremely well in sand, an seem to root very easy.

It is also one of the easiest substrates to plant in. Plants seem to stay anchored better in sand than gravel.

The only draw back with sand is compaction. I havent really had compaction problems in my tank, but I am pretty agressive with the vacuuming during WC's.
