Hey Guys ~

Posted on this bss tail before and I added salt for a time but kinda forgot about it ~ not sure if it ever really went away but now I see two little white spots as well ~ the tattered is from nipping but the spots??

Continue salt? Or.........

Thanks!

Marie,

The tail and the trailing edge of the dorsal do look a little weary. Those spots don't look like anything you need worry about to me. My discus get them from time to time, some think its mineral depsoits, me I don't know other than its never been an issue. As with any 'spots' on fish watch in case they spread! (but I don't think they will). No need to add salt, just plenty of clean water will do the trick.

yeah Marie, a little risque :).

I agree with Paul, probably from nipping or running into something. Just watch it and keep up the water changes!

I'm new to this, but those white spots do look a little like something I saw on my discus following a bacterial outbreak. I was told that it is a sign that the bacteria/protozoa (whatever it is) is still present in the tank but is now in remission/hibernation (not sure the correct term).

In my case, I had one fish that had survived the first bacterial outbreak and just had a couple white spots. I added new fish and they all came down with the same thing, 2 of the new fish and the incumbent fish died from this. Of my remaining fish, the spots resurfaced on one tail a month or more after treatment (but fish look/act perfectly healthy).

I was told to retreat until spots are gone, so that's what I'm currently doing.

Not sure this helps, but thought I would share my experiences - as limited as they are.

:) Sorry Marie... but wanted to give you another possibility/opinion.

I am treating with Mardel CopperSafe. No spots right now, but I'll probably give it a month to make sure nothing shows up before adding new fish.

I would keep up with big wc's. If something doesn't happen within the next couple weeks then try adding some rock salt. Don't go throwing in med's until you know forsure what the problem is.

Hey Marie:

Those spots are not harmful to the fish but they may remain for a long time. I have heard ppl say that the easiest way to get rid of them is to cut the fin. But I think you should not worry about that too much right now and finish with Al's recommendations.

I don't think I would worry about the spots, and for the frayed tail I would just keep up with the water changes, my fish will get in fights and will nip at each others tail all the time. The fin or tail usually heals in a day or two with water changes.

Marie,

I have seen this on my fish too. IT eventually goes away and doesnt see mto cause problems. THe raggedness will heal on its own. The spots... I dont think it matters.

Marie,
I have had spots like that on my discus many times, it always seems to be the same fish too. It has never bothered them and has always just gone away. I honetly still agree with what Paul said. I also wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure it will just go away in time.
