So ~ you guys actually take the out and lay them flat to measure? I am not sure I can do that:(

Marie, I put a piece of tape up on the side of my tank that is measured as they grow out a Juvies. I increase the size as they pass that size. Right now, from a Christmas batch, I have up a 5" strip of tape. Just wait until one comes up to the side of the tank, right next to the tape, and you can figure out the size pretty accurately..

Mat whatz the difference? Is one more accurate than the other or more important? What do breeders go by?
Didnt know there were two ways to go here ~

Total length is tip of nose to end of tail.
Standard length is tip of nose to the peduncle.
IMO, breeders ought to use standard length.

I like that Al ~ much better for me! I had heard this way as well but ~ well ~ this was explained a lil better I suppose ~
I shall try that! Thank you Al!
Mat ~ pedunclea? I always thought that standard was the way to go until someone recently told me dif ~ hmm.....makes them smaller tho yes? Thanks Mat ~

Well ~ more so for ME! lol! Cary or Dan once told me that a discus cld live out of water for ten minutes ~ can you believe that Connie?
Can not be too good for them tho ~ is a good piece of info however.....since lately I seem to be flooding my tanks more and more! Sooner or later one is bound to land on the floor ~
Ya think?
Marie ~ http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/29/29_4_11.gif
Not mine but I've seen a BD couple that the male was 9 inches and female was 7.5" Apparently this couple belong to Gabriel at Jack Wattley and not to the hatchery itself. I've also seen a Blue Panda again from JAck Wattley that is 8 inches its a shame its heavily peppered.

So why has only one person used a designated measuring standard when telling their fish's length?

Went to check out the fishroom of the owner of the blue panda. Well after taking measurements only got 7.5 inches at the begining of the tail fin. The guy said I could keep it if I wanted so it was worth th trip. He told me the fish is 6 years old and that half inch thick glass may have created the appearence of 8 inches.

Love to see a picture. I've heard the name Blue Panda used with many different colors.
In this case its a white PB with orage striations and a very distinct blue hue on the white parts. I'll try and borrow a camera.

The largest that I ever owned was between 6 1/4 and 6 1/2 inches NOT measuring his tail. Any discus with over 6 inches of body is a monster. I have heard of fish bigger but when I request proof (a Pic like ChuckBam posted) they always run and hide.......
-john
I measured mine once when he was being transfered to another tank. I did include the tail.
I don't want to make a habit out of plopping my fish out of it's tank and onto its side just so I can take a picture so I all I can say is I'm not lying ;)

You can buy adhesive backed measuring tape at Joann fabric's or many hardware stores and attach it to your tank also

Some of those backings for tanks, have little lines in inches and centimeters so you know the length of your backing. I usually cut those off and if I want to measure my fish, I just unroll it and place it on the front, wedged on the glass and the bottom brace. Then just wait for the fish to come by.

The Biggest Discus i have ever seen is at Gabes house (Wattley Discus) They 8 inches just monsters. When you see a ad for Wattley and see the Marlboro red in the picture those are the fish. They have been in his PLANTED tank since they were 3 long.Who say's you can not grow monster fish in planted tanks.

I mention earlier that the biggest discus I've seen was a Blue diamond that belonged to Gabriel not to the hatchery so........who knows.....maybe
Took me a couple days to get this guy to cooperate and turn just right on glass to get a solid measurment but he is exactly 7 inches. About a 3 year old LSS, proven male. That sponge filter behind him is a hydro V so you can see the hugeness of him
I have this guy(A.K.A. The Big Guy) but I've never measured him before so not sure of the size but he is big I would guess 6" maybe I could be wrong though.
