There are quite a few ppl that do the potted BB tank.

I think they tend to be less interested in the plants than they are about the discus and other issues that revolve around the fish. The plants take a back seat to the fish.
You will tend to see and hear more about the planted discus tanks since we will tend to have more issues balancing CO2/Ferts/etc with the discus and share our experiences.

It does seem that on this forum [Planted/Show Tanks and Biotopes] most ppl have gone the planted-discus-tank route and the people with the potted plants still consider their tanks BB. Since those tanks are typically LowTech you don't tend to hear about them as much. But there are plenty around.

Oh yeah, I used them in breeder tanks too, back when I lived in Mississippi. We're setting up a room right now strictly for breeders. I'll do it again once I get the breeders moved out there.

Here's another thing I want to try in a my display/R&R tank: http://www.aquaforums.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5080&hl=

Okay, I was surprised no mention in the thread, I really liked them, I didnt do it in growout tanks as I just never got around to it,but they make as much or more sense to me in them, for the benefits but also easy to remove for netting out a tank,

I never kept any records but it 'seemed' that the parameters were easier to control in the 'potted tanks' then the BB.

On the new tanks being set up each will have a couple pots .

I have potted plants in all of my bb tanks. They're there mostly for me, but I think the fish "like" them too. They are a PITA when cleaning though, and who wants to take them out everyday to do that? Not me. I do think they are very good in breeder tanks, I know my breeders always lay on or very near Echinodorus when they are in their tank.

I think that the discus like picking around driftwood and plants - mine do anyway. I think that the plants do help with water quality.

I had a heavily planted discus tank until recently, then didn't quarantine properly, lost all my discus and threw everything that had been in the tank away and prepared to start again. Because we will be moving soon, probably, I decided to try barebottom, but couldn't quite bring myself to do it!

The attached picks are of a work in progress!!! Driftwood has been moving on me, plants going walkabout. But you can probably get the idea of what I am trying to do. I have one filter outlet directed down to try and push all the rubbish down one end of the tank to make syphoning out easy. I usually use a hose, water on, to push rubbish that I can't get to under the driftwood down to the end as well.

I hope it is going to mean that I can have the advantages of BB with the advantages of plants! Hopefully you can have your cake and eat it too!! time will tell.

Lesley,
How large are the discus? I ask because those are either small discus or that is one big pleco. I have a couple of common plecos in a 125 gallon, one is about 8" TL and the other one is about 6". The 6 incher, believe it or not, was 2" two months ago.

Hi lhforbes12

Apart from the larger blue fish, the others are about 2-2 1/2". The golden plec is 13 1/2". Yes they do grow really fast. Great cleaners up and no spare algae in their tanks!

Hi jake,

Camera is getting older now, about time to treat myself to a new one! Is a Nikon Coolpix 995. Has been a great camera. I want one of the digital SLR's!
