View Full Version : Pigeons (not exactly WB) - Pictures Updated 12/08

Discus must officially be the most difficult fish to photograph. No matter how hard I try, I cannot get the pictures to come out looking like a fair representation of the fish.

Anyway, last Wednesday (July 19th) I got 10 White Butterflies from Dan. Actually, 9 appear to be White Butterfly and 1 appears to be White Scorpion (WB x SS). They ate the first day and seemed pretty social, then on day 2 they decided to get skittish.

They are acclimating to my routine slowly. Today they come to the top (cautiously) to get food. I feed them constantly. Everytime I walk by the tank, they get a snack. Right now they are enjoying Hikari bloodworms and mysis, and two kinds of flakes. This week they'll be introduced to beefheart. No CBW here.

These pictures go from oldest to newest. The first ones with flash are from Thursday, the rest are from Friday and yesterday. Some of these pictures are with flash, and some are without. The fish look so much better than this in person -- they are very round and have great fins. But since I'm no professional photographer, these will have to do :)

I want to thank Forrest, too. These babies originally came from him, and were quarantined and shipped by Dan. When Forrest originally posted these, a few of us were trying to figure out how to get some imported, but he sold out before anyone could come up with an easy solution. Luckily for the next spawn, Dan was able to bring them in.

Nice Ryan - I know you've been waiting to get some for a long time. It's really fun to watch them whiten up as they mature. The orange striations will shrink and the white will expand until the discus is nearly solid white, but with the nice red eyes.

Thanks for all the comments.

Forrest, I think you are right... there are a few fish that show a distinctly different pattern. Maybe they are WS. Also, when I moved them from bags to tank I held them up in the light and could see the SS bars. We'll see what happens as they color up some more.

The fish get better and better everyday. Yesterday, I fed them little snacks every 15 - 30 minutes to get them used to me. Now they meet me at the top of the tank when they see me.

I will try to take better pictures as they grow. I snap a few everyday and I'm always disappointed in how they turn out. It may be because they don't hold still :)

Aah, Ryan, I feel so much better and so should you about your picture taking.:) I feel the same way as you. Take tons and maybe one or two are "okay". But just keep plugging and shooting away, you will improve. Look at Marie; she's improved tons (right, Marie?).

And it definately is hard to take good pics when they won't hold still for you.

Aren't you glad you waited for "the" fish you wanted? I'm jealous, they really are beautiful. Lucky you.

A couple more...

I'm trying to keep their tummies full and the water clean. That proves difficult sometimes because they are literally hungry all day. Even after eating a huge chunk of frozen food, they will rush to the top for a treat. They're getting about 90% w/c a day, I drain the tank til they lay on their sides (and they're only 2 - 3" fish).

I've had these guys for just under 2 months and I wanted to post a couple updated pictures.

Unfortunately the fish turned really orange because I've been feeding a lot of ONF1 flake and ONF1 cubes. You can see the white striation filling in, though. I'm not sure when they're supposed to cover over. It seems like I've had them forever, but it's only been since July 19th.

Out of ten fish, I only have one noticable runt. The rest are at various sizes, ranging somewhere between 3" to 4". They were about 2 - 2.5" when they got here.

Ryan
09-12-2006, 06:46 PM
Dan,

They mostly get beefheart and bloodworms now. I've cut back on the ONF1 cubes. I actually don't mind some of the red. The runt refuses to eat any of the ONF1 products, so he's still very pale in comparison to the rest of the group.

I should mention that the flash does make them look redder than they are. They're actually more of a tangerine color.

They look a lot bigger in the pictures than in person... isn't that funny? A few of them really are turning out to be very nice.

They're still getting 90%+ w/c every night. I drain the tank down past the heaters (you can see them in the pics) so that the fish actually lay flat on the bottom and there's just barely any water covering them. I'm squeezing sponges/scrubbing the glass every other day now. They eat about 6 times a day... 3 large meals, with 3 smaller snacks in between.

I hope by the end of the year they're giants :)

The largest is 4" (maybe slightly over) from nose to caudal peduncle, so yes it's SL. I don't include the tail. The others range more around 3.5". They went through a growth spurt, but it has slowed down again for now.

They're in a 55 gallon tank. I bumped the temp down to 84F (I had it between 86F and 88F for the first couple months) and they get 95%+ w/c everyday. I only leave about an inch of water in the tank for the fish... but technically I can't call that 100% :) I also squeeze out my sponges daily and I wipe down the glass usually 2 - 3 times a week.

The six feedings consist of bloodworms, two kinds of flake, beefheart, and occasionally frozen Mysis. I was feeding ONF1 cubes but the fish were much redder and I wanted them to fade back to their more natural golden/peach color.

The feedings are 1) in the early morning, 2) mid-morning before I head out to work, 3) when my sister gets home in the early afternoon (she feeds them for me), 4) when I get home in the late afternoon, 5) in the early evening, and 6) after a w/c before bed. The meals are pretty small, but they're frequent. The food doesn't sit on the bottom of the tank and spoil so I like it better this way.

Ryan, they are beautiful! You're hired! BTW, what exactly is ONF1 cubes? I gather it promotes red coloration?

Connie

Ryan
10-25-2006, 01:29 PM
Hi Connie,

ONF1 is short for Ocean Nutrition Formula One. Ocean Nutrition brand makes several types of flakes and frozen cubes. They have several formulas, the most popular being One (in a blue container) and Two (in a green container). They are promoted as marine foods but the ingredients in the Formula One cubes are actually the same as the ingredients in Jack Wattley's commercial discus cubes.

They contain red enhancers, namely astaxanthin. Within a couple weeks of feeding, my fish went from the pale peachy color you see at the beginning of this thread to being bright red. lol.

Here's more info on the foods by ON:

cary

hi cary,
nice fishes u got there.hpe we can share some experiance of breeding the linage in future.

hi all,
the WS/WB that ryan cross was dirive from

male - derived from a cross from a white scorpion with golden pigeon(already show most white on body)

female - a white butterfly(cant find any better pic of female n the fish is gone)

pic below

problem for this linage is the white will take a longer while to appear.reason to use golen pigeon(selected linage) is to make the linage much cleaner compare to normal white butterfly.
the fishes that ryan got was result from a friend of mine that he passed the fries to me for raising them up.i got all his fishes later n i tried to improve the linage n sent bob (upper canada) the newer version.the third n fourth pic is what he got now(more pic at his simply sponsor post).

http://forum.simplydiscus.com//showthread.php?t=53931

i hope the above will clear u guys doubts.

ryan, forgive me for hi jack ur post.
in my opinion,to breed discus, not just copy fishes from other breeders.to improve the linage is my gold n it will be much more meaningful to be a breeder.
im currently have another improve cross to make make the whaite appear earlier n supprise me that some of the off spring show full pattern while they r 1"(even the 14 bars, white scorpion).hope u guys enjoy the pic, fishes currently r 1.5",they show good potential n hope they will turn out what i expected.the pic were taken a week ago, will take more pic today n update later.

Ryan
10-25-2006, 11:33 PM
Dan,

It's not a problem. They are still turning out really nice and you never know what'll happen in the next few months. Forrest was kind enough to track down some pictures from the spawn before these and send them to me. They're not solid, but the white striations are much thicker and cover most of the body. The white has spread considerably on these guys over the past 3 months and it may continue to do so. All we can do is grow them out and see :)

Either way, I've really enjoyed them and I think they are beautiful fish. They have really nice shape and they've done well for me. I hope when I divide them up and send some to Al that the remaining fish will hit another growth spurt and put on some more size. I think they're going to be gorgeous as adults.

I'll continue to update everyone as they keep growing and changing. They may surprise us all.

Hi Forrest - I have nothing but respect for you as a breeder. Improving the lineage to remove the pigeon gene and have intense white color all over its body? That'll be awesome and I wish you tons of luck Forrest, hopefully for you it won't take that long to achieve.;)

Very...very nice fish u have all. To Forrest, great..great job u have done. R u breeder or a hobbies turn to be a breeder? If u r a breeder basicly..., no wonder u cant have great fish, if u hobbies.... 4 tumb up 4 u. I think i make the right step to joint here. Btw forrest, what is the popular strain right now in Malay? Thanx

Sooooooooooooooooooo... it has been a while since I took any pictures. As some of you may have read, I sent half of the group to Al/brewmaster and I kept half.

They didn't turn out to be White Butterflies I guess. They look more like pearl pigeons to me. But they have grown on me because I haven't raised out a group of discus in a long time. So for now they're staying with me. I've had them since the middle of July, almost 5 months.

They're not monsters, but I think they're doing alright. They do have nice shape, IMO. Sorry for the large photos, I didn't feel like resizing them a second time. :p

Very nice shape Ryan. How old are the fish around 8 - 9 months. What size are they in the last picture? I would assume around 4.5 - 5" SL

Ryan i m digging the shapes on your wb s ..looking very close to show quality,,excellent job..

i had bought some wb s from frank at gold mountain discus almost exactly a year ago ,,they arrived i think at 2 inches,,they are now last time i checked 5 inches,,also still have orangey / white is in striation form still nothing solid yett ..guess we have to wait a bit longer than expected for full solid beautiful white..

But those WB s looking really good right about now from CARY.. :) how much how much you still ship Cary? :)

Ryan, wow these have come on. A very nice group of discus indeed. They have more than just good shape, what about the clour, the eye and the fins? all are good my friend. Keep going with these.

They will be spawning before you know it LOL!

Then I'll box them up and ship them to you. I don't have time to breed discus. Once they start spawning they'll probably have to find new homes. :D

Ryan, I think they are better than you give them credit for, they are a super shape and they look nice and thick. Great fish

Well, I do like them... but I only have room for one tank, and so I really wanted to fill it with my favorite type of discus. :D I thought I was getting WB, but I didn't, so now I'm out of tank space and I really didn't end up with the fish I hoped to get. Anyone who knows me from the boards knows that I've been trying to find good WB for about 5 years now.

My dilemma now is that I have them and I've grown attached to them, so I'm committed to growing them out to full adulthood. After that, I'll probably keep a couple favorites in our fish tank at the office, or I'll sell the whole batch. Either way I'll probably make room for growing out another group of fish. Hopefully somewhere I'll find what I'm looking for.

They do look great Ryan!! You have done an excellent job raising them up... granted they aren't a light color, but none-the-less, they are beautiful!!!

P.s. How the heck have ya been????
