Last night hubby and I were watching a movie and it was a commercial and I looked over at the tank and one of my longfin serpae is acting strange. Just kinda floating with no control at all. I actually thought he was dead. He floated so that his head was pointing straight up and tail pointing down (not floating at the top of the tank, but in the middle of it) and then all of a sudden he just took off swimming. From across the room we could see something white hanging out of his left gill. It looked like tissue to me.
I really had no place to move him so hes still in the tank, but as I was trying to get pictures... he shook this "tissue" off of himself. Now he looks ok. He eats fine, swims fine except for the "floating" when I first saw him acting strange and there was another time, after a water change when this fish would stop swimming and just sink like a rock to the bottom... sit a minute then swim off. Otherwise hes fine and hes the only fish in the tank thats doing it.
Nothing new added/done
Tank parameters are
pH 6.8
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 5.0
fully planted, sand substrate, about 80 degrees temp..
Any ideas? :(
Pictures:
These pics are terrible cause I had been playing with settings and didn't change it back when I snapped these but you can still see the tissue hanging off.

This is the tissue after it came off. I did remove it from the tank after the pics.

All of that was last night and the fish seems fine this morning. You never would have known it happened!
