I wonder what if any the pros and cons and how wise it is to have:confused:

So........calling all computer freaks!!

I rather buy TeraStation Home Server from buffalotech. More GB and it will do backup.

So I would wonder, can someone else, the service owner, the Gov't, look at all your stuff there? How secure would it be?

Debbie,

I wouldn't doubt that they could. If you just want to back up personal files, email, etc., it's much easier and cheaper to buy a portable hard drive.

By far the cheapest, simplest solution is to merely add a DVD burner to your PC and backup to that. I think they cost around $40 these days. Safe, secure and you can always backup, and have the media close to hand. If your hdd goes out, how are you going to access the Internet?
Thang's solution is costly, and is certainly not needed by you. Another alternative is an external hard drive, powered by a USB port, again it's simple, very easy to install and costs less than $200. The backing up to an Internet server is actually a very old idea which never took off due to the many problems associated with it.

The price of an external HD has really dropped. I saw a 200 gig yesterday for $99, but I don't know what makes one better than another. I just use the burner...

$10/month seems expensive compared to other options you have. 5gb is not much storage at all espically if you want to back up digital media and photos.
Just get another harddrive or DVDRW.

My DVD burning software includes a program to do this automatically... I have it set to back up to my external hard drive.

If your data is importance, I would recommend buying the external drive hard that also have a backup function, such as disk mirroring.

Yes my solution is very expensive, but the amount of disk space that I needed this is perfect. You could try product from linksys, it is cheaper.

Yes you could access it from another computer... but what would be the point? Your data is still in ether space

Marie,
If you want automated get this, it's $30 a year and will do automatic backup, defrag your hdd, is a firewall that is not more trouble than it's worth, and virus scanner, and does it does all without you doing anything;

It's from M$ so you know you can trust it <vbg>

Thang,
There is nothing wrong with using a SAN or NAS, it's just that for one PC it's way over kill IMO
