Hi Friends,
I like to share a few pics of my new interest. I been having trouble with consistently doing waterchanges to the tanks in my office. I ended up with this set up. No waterchanges and maintenace is very minimum. I hook up a humidifier on a timer so no need to water the plants.

Thanks for viewing.

Very cool Dan. Beautiful setup. What types of frogs are those? Are they the poisonous kind?

Very nice!

I played with a viv (45gal) a while back and it was fun. No where as nice as yours though. I really liked the orchids and bromeliads for plants, looks like you got both ;), they and a great splash of color.

Thank you Chris,
I believe this types are poisonous in the wild. These are domestic bred and are not poisonous. From my understanding they eat an insect that are toxic and the poison is passed on the frogs.

Thank you Dissident and Meauxjeaux

How long before that becomes a new challenge?

Dart Frogs are cool. I would love room to set up a Dart frog habitat.

This is just too too tempting. I've always been in love with poison dart frogs from the first time I saw them. Of course I'm also in love with fresh water rays, and there is no extra time to have them either. I guess I'd better keep focused on my projects already in the works.

Please tell us about where you got the plants and frogs, what kind of food they eat and how you care for the set up, you lucky guy.

The challenge is culturing fruit flies for feeding. The rest is easy.

Hi Liz,
I guess the good thing is no waterchanges and algae to scrap off. I little trimming is all you need to do. I try to keep most plants in their pots so they can be replace without disturbing the roots.
The light use can be a regular flourescent bulb. I have cp from my planted tank.
I have a humidefier rig to come on regularly so no need to water the plants. All the plants are low light and air plants.
I believe the hardest part in keeping these frogs is culturing flightless fruit flies. Once you get going you never have to buy feed. I also buy 1 week old crickets to feed them.

Fortunately the person I got the frogs from lives less than 10 minutes away from me. She's a library of information and willing to share it.

Thank you Angela. The red plant is a bromiliad. In the wild this is where the frogs lay their eggs.

Very Cool Dan! What made you get into frogs? I took a pic recently from one of our lfs and I think this one is the same as yours ~ you tell me! They were so neat ~ their tanks were awesome with pockets of steam/fog popping up everywhere ~little waterfalls and lots of plants! The frogs didnt even look real as they didnt move much!

dans right. its what they eat in the wild that make them poinsonous. the ones in captivity are not poisonous.

Wow Dan, I bet the kids like looking for the frogs in there! They really do look like jewels in their habitat! A humidifier? And here we are trying to De-humidify things in the house! Wouldn't it be cool to have a big tall tank, have roots and discus in the bottom and branches, plants and frogs in the top?

Thank you April. I had Firebelly Toads in the past and they do eat a lot of crickets.

Thanks Kiwi. This planted tank does not require a waterchange.:)
Much easier to maintain.

Debbie,
Yes, my son wants one in his room. Unfortunately this frogs can drown. These are not typical frogs. So the can drown in water deeper than 1/2".:(

Hey...I have replacement for your spotted. Come by anytime.

Thank you Marie. :)

Absolutely beautiful Dan. Great work. A friend of mine had a similar setup and had a misting system. Simulated rainfall. A bulkhead in the bottom of the tank recycled the water that got thru.

Aren't dendrobates illegal in California? To be honest I love tiny frogs, even our local kind the " coqui", but keeping them or importing them is illegal here!
It is a NIce tank, I'm sure the feeling of "new tank" is still there.
I would not mind more pics ;)

They 're cute and cudley when you see one of them. But when they are in the 1000's and in the dead of night singing their mating song.."co-kee", "co-kee".. IN unison they can be quite irritating when you're trying to get a good night's sleep. These frogs also made their way to HI. They are trying to eradicate them by spraying their habitats with mild solution made of caffeine.

Funny you say that. I'm in the process of setting up my 125 gal tank into a vivarium with Frogs. It will have a waterfall a few other neat features.:) :) :)

Alright Dan, each picture of your new tanks is more beautiful than the last! Gonna have to pass on the replacement, others are out of quarrantine now, can't do that to one lonely fish. Thanks for the offer though. My tank is full now!

I don't want to hijack the thread but, it's sad that I haven't heard a bunch of coquis singing in the dead of night(to be honest I miss it very much) since my childhood because their eradication, and honestly Dan's setup made me nostalgic and sad for what for many is the symbol of my island. To top it he basically made a biotope where the coqui would be find!

Hi Ed13,
I completely agree. All of the frogs I have are all domestically bred. I believe it's very difficult to import these frogs as some of them are in the endagered species list. Most of the species dissapearance are due to habitat distruction not rfrom collectors. In some cases because of dedicated breeders it's to re-populate areas where the species are gone.

Unfurtunately the way the world is going, you'd be surprise by the fact that perhaps one day a single person breeding X animal, coral Y or plant Z in their basement or in a small corner of their house might be the only one capable of keeping a species represented in this planet.

For example this is some of the problems in my home
