View Full Version : What is "The Dance"?

I've seen people mention that they see their discus doing the "dance" before mating, and I was just curious as to whether this is a term for an actual thing the fish do or just two fish being together. I've been trying to find a pair in my 10+ discus for around 6 months now and havn't had much luck, but then that's probably because only 2 of them are about full size and the rest are medium to small size still.

One thing I have noticed though is one of the full sized ones seems to shake his back top and/or bottom fins, like he'll be twitching or scratching an itch or something. I was thinking maybe that was the dance you guys were referring to. Am I way off? :P

Hi Onur,

The twitching is part of it. Pairs will also swim toward each other in an arc shape, for lack of a better description... up, then down.

Go here, I have a diagram. Fin twitch might just be bad water quality. Its the shiver you are looking for and this swimming pattern.

It is something they do. It is very subtle and romantic in my opinion. They will pass each other bowing and dancing and nod at each other while twitching at times while doing this.

Have you seen the video of their reunion concert? Excellent.
The CD is one of their best yet imo.
