We went to our local fish auction and I picked up 4 juvenile Cobalt Blue Discus:D . I am extremly excited. We went by a pet store to check some Discus out, we came across one that we were told was Stunted. So because I have a huge heart and know I could give this little guy a chance we picked him up today as well.

My question should I keep the stunted Discus alone in a 20 gal and feed him with quality food and daily water changes and be left alone or should I add him with the others so he won't be in a tank himself? The main tank is a 37gal 30long x22 high x 12wide. Yes it is aquascaped and cycled with other compatible fishes. The 20 gal is bare.

I am so extremly excited

Here is my stunted Discus.

You should always QT new fish so i would definately put the stunted discus in his own tank for at least 4 weeks before adding him to the other discus.

Personally i think the other discus you just bought should also be in theyre own tank ..... without other fish ...... for a good QT period.

Hope you got a good discount. That fish does look a little stunted. Big eyes and a lot of coloration for its size. Give it some TLC and hope for the best.

As Cage says.. QT, QT, QT.. After that I would let join them together. Discus are highly social and keeping one by itself just b/c its stunted wouldn't be right. In fact maybe he'll/she'll do better in a group. Good luck. How about a pic of the rest of the discuses.

Thank you. Thefish we got from the fish auction are from a very good breeder here in Winnipeg we have been to his house. The fish in the 37 gal are all new guys bought 2 days ago. We have a aqua clear filter and took sponges and bio balls from our other tanks to put in it, then took cycled water from our other tanks. I plan on doing water changes daily.

Normally with my cichilds I do 20% water changes every second day, on my grow out tanks I do 50% daily water changes. It seems in my cichilds tank the fresh water being poured in gets them in the mood for spawning. They dance under the water being poured in and next thing I know my females are holding. I did a water change yesterday and today I have 5 females holding. I already have 200 fry growing out.lol

I was hoping to put this guy with the others since everyone is new in that tank, but I will do what you suggested and keep him/her alone in the 20gal.
My 5 other Discus I got today are all swimming around together, eating and exploring.

Thank you

btw the picture I posted does this guy look stunted?

OMG - it looks like Timbo's avatar!!!!

Poor little thing. You have a soft heart - good for you and for the lil guy! Just remember to keep everybody QT'd and separate for at least 6 weeks.

I ment to mention that in my 37 gal I have a aquaclear 70 and a hydro sponge. In all my tanks I over filter. In my 70 gal tank with cichilds I have 2 fluval 304 and a hydro sponge.

Thank you for the compliment he is a cutie.

Good for you Asa ~ You're A Good Man Charlie Brown...He does not look like he feels all that hot either....cld have more prob then just being stunted....has a cloudy eye...cld be the photo or bad water quality from whence he came or possible internal parasites....

Keep a watch ~ close one ~ and QT~

I think Timbo's avatar is cute, even if it is stunted with that big eye. This poor lil guy at least will have care by someone who wants to give it a chance. :)

Here is another picture with no flash. I don't see cloudy eye. But I am just a newbie with Discus.

Asa, I don't see a cloudy eye either in this picture. I think it was just the previous picture itself, or maybe spots on tank. He's got some pretty colors.

I don't mean to burst your bubble here, but a 'very good breeder' wouldn't give away any of these discus, let alone sell any of them.

I know it sounds pretty harsh, but all the discus that you've shown here are culls IMO.

BTW....Welcome to Simply!

since everyone has referenced "WhoUcallinStunted" guess i had to post. :)

dave and dianne, the first guy is definately quite stunted and at least one of the others appears to be as well. i, personally would not have bought them because although stunting will not preclude a long life for them, they will probably never achieve good growth. they can be great pets however....good luck with them and feed'em LOTS, they need to put on some weight

Well just an update. Everyone is going well, eating well, swimming around, all in all very enjoyable to watch.

The fish auction we attended was with members of our aquarium society, we share experiences, ideas, sell and trade livestock and equipement. Some members bring in fish for BAP (Breeders Awards Program).

Here is a new picture of my stunted guy only after 2 days being with us. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/Buford01/2days.jpg

Well i think they ALL look quite delightful, does it matter if its stunted, its a living thing and belongs to you two and no one else, besides, i think he looks like he has purked up dont you.?

Stick him in with the others after QT for sure, he looks lonely...
