I've had pairs lay eggs on right-side up flower pots too, but normally they lay them on the "flowers" (in my case Echinodorus bleheri leaves).

They will spawn on anything.

One word of warning about new clay flower pots. They are sometimes treated with antibacterial sprays to prevent algae and bacteria from growing on them in the store. This can kill off the biofilter in your tank. I clean and soak any new flower pots for several weeks before using them.

They make good surfaces for spawning and the fish can't push them around the tank like they can plastic cones.
