Hey Guys ~ does it matter how long you age your water for? Is 12 hours sufficient or must one go 24?

Exactly what does this process accomplish?

I think it would depend on your water how long is sufficient even though 24 hours is recommended. Ageing water serves to get rid of excess CO2 which can cause large PH fluctuation. Also, for those that have only chlorine in their water, chlorine dissipates in 24 hours. By using an internal filter, you can also filter your water thru carbon to remove impurities from the water and peat can also be used to lower PH and somewhat soften water.

it let CO2 evaporate, and therefore put the pH to its real value.
it let Clorine dissipate, and therefore not kill the bacterial filtering flora

(There is a few place where there is not so much chlorine in the city water, that discus owner and succesfull local breeder put there tap water directly with their fish... these guys have water at PH 6.8 TDS 50 straight from tap (beauport city near Québec))

on that note 12 hr should do the job (but 24 h is better:p )

It depends on what and how much of what, is in your water....and how vigorously you aerate it...the only way to really say for sure is simple trial and error.
If I'm not mistaken Carol has said in the past that she can get away with 3-4 hours of vigorous aeration and the pH settles out....she's on a well though and doesn't deal with Chlorine or Chloramines. Prime will take care of that instantly though...

Fill your container, or barrel and start aeration....test every hour untill the water reaches your known equalibrium.

hmm.....start aeration huh? So ~ large fast moving airstone? lol! O.k.a.y....then ~ So Tony if I just add Prime no need to age?

I'm thinking....probably not ~ or everyone wld be doing that ~

What a PIA guys! Connie ~ you are so wise in this area ~ Tony You too;) Connie ...Tony....thank You!:D

Dan ~ I have ph straight from the tap at 7.2 or 7.6... I actually forget ...It is written down somewhere:o Never changes either ~ test it often ~

You are probably all gonna smack me but I was asking this for my CBW! I think I rinsed them with aged tap water last year when I used them for months....Did ya all think I was gonna age my tank water now? I cld never in a million years pull that off ~no room energy or desire ~

If you dont age your tank water for your discus ..... theres certainly no need to age it for CBW.

I don't use aged water for my CBW, and they do just fine, as do my Discus and I have no fluctuation of PH. Maybe he's concerned for those who have chlorine in their water? I don't, I'm on my own well, so...

Really, its sounds funny to age water for worms, but not for the Discus ;) :D

The reasons for aging water for CBW is the same as for the fish. These are general instructions Dan gives, as I'm sure he doesn't have the time to research the water quality for each of his customers.

As for what aging water accomplishes, here are a couple of links:
