Hey all my filter broke down on my 150 gallon and wanted some help so I can go out and buy another. I don't only want advice for discus tank because this tank switches from discus to large cichlids and sometimes both with a seperater. Would a XP3 or 4 or whichever the biggest one is be enough filtartion with a powerhead for a 150 gallon???? people talk a lot about sponge filters and they are SUPER cheap, would lets say two large sponge filters be enough for a 150 gallon?????

On my 150 stock tank I run an xp3, two biowheel 350's and 4 sponges..

The tank has had over 100 3 inch discus in it with no issues..

My recommendation would be an xp3 (possibly a xp4 but they are new and I have not heard reviews except from the sales people) and a bio wheel or a 3 sponge filters.

Hi Chago, what kind of stocking densities are you looking at?

no more then 10 discus at a time. Or about 3 large cichlids at a time.

I wouldn't bother with an XP4. I was looking into purchasing one and found that the flow rate WITH media is 3 gph more than the flow rate of an XP3, WITH media (I think its 187 gph for the XP3 versus 190 gph for the XP4). But the cost is about $100 more for the XP4. IMO, not worth it since you can get 2 XP3s and double your output for the price of only one XP4.
