i recently got back into fish about 4months ,i had an 8yr break when i jumped into it i bought discus because before i stopped i was going to start keeping discus, i had a good idea about discus before i left the hobby as luck would have it i had 2 of my old tanks on standby 50gals. i began cycling them at the same time and bought a 75gal in the meantime. i cycled the 75 in about 4days using biospira and an aged canister from my buddy. i kept some tetras and siamese algae eaters for about 2 weeks before buying 5 juv turqs. i only have 1 turq now i sold the 4 and got some 1RB,2SSxflachen,2 pb's,2 pearls. there about 3.5" now. i'm going to tranfer the fish into my 50gals so i can redo the 75 w/ plants (i had good sucess long ago doing a low tech setup) i've been reading up on C02 setups so i'm going that route. i've also been reading the begginer sections and filter sections. i used eheims and marinelands in the past and use them now. i never really stray from what worked for me before. i'm looking for breeders in the Los Angeles or Orange County area so i can purchase some discus price isn't really an issue as long it's from a good strain. i've read horror stories with keeping dicus and it bugged me for sometime but i got over that. i recently purchased some stendekler discus but they didn't have the one's i really wanted san merah.santarem or the flachen. i've seen the discus from asia and there colors and form are very nice as well. I really don't want to purchase w/o having a look at the fish in person. Ok i've rambled this site is very informative and the posters have lot knowledge that i can learn from.

Thanks
Nino

Welcome aboard. I like to see my discuses in person too..

But you can't always get what you want... doesn't that sound like a song??

Any ways.. you can always try some sponsors on this board. If you're in the mood for spots, Internatinal Discus has some great ones.

... but you get what you need :D

I stopped buying Discus at LFSs years ago and life has been so much easier since. I now order my fish only from reputable breeders / distributors, most but all of whom are Simply Discus Sponsors. There are a couple of he best in the sponsor section, so PM me if you want to know what I think.

Buying this way, you'll normally have to buy more fish at once, at a lower price than the LFS, but the shippping will kick the price back up. More you buy, less per fish. Look to buy all the fish that you will put in one tank in one order... That way the QT tank also serves as the growout tank.

Always QT, always make sure the filters are cycled before you add fish, never mix fish from different shipments into the same QT tank.

greyhoundfan: thanks for the info.

cosmo: thanks for the QT advice, since the ones right now are my 2nd batch it's basically QT/grow tank as you said. i will take the advice of the members here and buy 5-6 adults for my planted tank.

Hi ya Ronin!! Welcome aboard!

Is your planted tank set up yet? C02, filters, lighting, plants all that stuff?

If you haven't, I know you have done all this before, but thought I would jus throw it out there anyways. Get it established with plants for a couple months, then add the adults...:)
