Well, I think Im ready to commit. Its new tank time lol....

I haven't comitted to what size tank to get, but am looking for at least 100 gallons. I like the 48x24x24 120 XH. The 60" tank is good as well.

What would you all recommend??

I also will need some fishes, but I believe there is a breeder here in Burlington, Ont, isnt there?

Cheers

Hi Reel,
The 120 is a nice tank, it's great as a BB and also to plant in. You have the depth to really make an aquascape come alive. However if you're short, like me, the height and depth can spell trouble since it's hard to get into the corners. The 120 long is also nice, and since it's only 18" deep it's much easier to keep clean. If space isn't a concern I would suggest a 125, best of both worlds.

I bought a 125 for my fronts about 3 or 4 months ago... sweet tank. But now I'm thinkin 220...... LOL. I understand the bug. But if I move the Fronts.... then the Discus could have the 125..... :argue:

Always go for the biggest tank your can afford and your floor can support.

My personal preference would be an 18" high tank for two reasons. They are easier to clean, as previously mentioned, and since adult discus generally inhabit the lower protion of the tank, there is a foot of wasted tank space which means more water is wasted when doing w/c's. Theoretically, one might think they could house more discus with the extra gallonage, but in reality, the space providing the extra gallons of water will be unused for the most part by the discus, and while providing extra water for better stability, more discus will be forced to live in too close quaters to each other. This will add to taxing the immune system because of added stress, which of course leads to disease. Stress causes most discus related health problems. IMO&E, a 100gal tank measuring 72"x18"x18" (100L) is superior to the 100H dimensions you stated for discus keeping. You can actuall house comfortablly more discus in the 100L than the 100H even though you have the same amount of water. If it were me, and I only had room for a 48" long tank, I'd get a tank measuring 48"x18"x18" (75gal). I don't know if length is an issue for your available space for another tank.

Great reading this over!!!

I have decided to bump my smaller fronts into the bigger tank. I have 3 cyps that will join them, thus putting 29 juvi fronts in a 125 gallon. No problems. I will now use a 55 gallon to grow up some younger discus. I will be moving in March to a bigger place, so I will have room for another 125 (which really is likely to be a 180 lol). The 125 will become the discus tank.

What about a planted tank vs bare bottom?? Can one have potted plants, or is it better to simply have a bare tank??

I'm excited.!!!!

Even the gf chimed in - she thinks discus are "cool" lol.

So the fish room begins!!!:D

Planted tank-------Adults

BB-----------------grow out tank

Potted plant or two-----juvies 3.5"-4.5" (although IMO, you will get healthier Discus with a BB)

JMHO...

Potted plants and growing out discus works fine.
