My red melon has had a bulge in it for some time now. Sometimes it is not noticeable, other times like today it seems quite large. The fish eats and behaves normally, except that is does hide every once in a while. I dont think this is bloat, as i dont think its in the right area. Any thoughts on what this is and what i would do about it if anything?

Here is the best pic i have so far....

I have no idea what it is since there are no organs nor does the abdominal cavity extend that far up. It may be a cyst or a tumor

I'd go with some sort of cyst but its guesswork.

Poor mate.

It does look like a tumor. How old is it?? Do you know what stock it came from????

:( This red melon is only about 1 yr old. If its a tumor or cyst, is there anything to do for it? I dont think surgery is an option here.

If it's a cyst it may come to the surface and you can deal with it from there.......if it's a tumor then there's nothing that can be done

I've read a lot of discus books. that's my only credibility as I've only been in the hobby for a year!! Not very long at all. hehe

The one instance of a tumor I read in one of my books. After the fish died, they opened up the discus and found that it indeed was a tumor. But it kinda looked like that- an abrupt "lump" in its side.

I'm sure if you continue with good water and good food it can still have a good life. It might even clear up?? I wouldn't breed it tho.

From what I see the fish is a vary beautiful fish. it looks to have vary little peppering and its a good shape. its a shame if it where to be a tumor.

She is a female. She laid eggs once, but ate them. She is my cleanest of my PB discus. Yes, it is a shame if its a tumor. If its a cyst, that would be better, or is the fate the same?

Im sad to say i had to put my favourite discus down tonight. The tumour got to a point where she could not keep herself upright and her condition was deteriorating badly. :( I know it was for the best, but its still tough. (especially on the kids....actually who am i trying to kid, the kids will forget tomorrow, but i wont:( )

:( It always seems to be the favorite ones that get sick and have the hardest time. Sorry... you did the right thing. It's never good to let them suffer needlessly.
