Eheim 2213 placement

I'm considering an Eheim 2213 on my smaller pleco tank and was wondering if I can put it next to the tank, or does it have to be a certain distance below the tank?

IMO, the 2213 will be fine even if it's at the same level with the tank, the pump might have to work harder and the flow rate might be a bit slower though. I have mine under the tank in the tank stand/cabinet, and it works great.

I love my 2213, six years non stop service and all I had to replace was the impeller shaft(which I broke while during cleaning).
