I have some fish in my 46g that i want to take out and replace with Discus. How long can i leave my filter without any fish in the tank?

I left a tank for 2 weeks with no fish. I did put in a few pellets of food every few days though to feed the bio. Then I did a WC, added a 5 " Discus never had any ammonia or nitrite.

A few days won't hurt it, a few weeks will. If its to be a few weeks a few drops of pure ammonia every other day will safely keep the filter ticking over.

If all you had was a potted plant and a few Corys or some other fish that could be easily be moved there would be no issue.

Even just a potted plant and no fish would assure the aquarium could take on one pair of discus.

I may be old fashioned but adding ammonia or feeding an empty tank just isn't something I'm prepared to trust.
