I thought I would post a few pictures of San Merahs i acquired from Al back in early June. I really like this strain and am continually facinated by the varied ways they accentuate their color. The black rimmed one in the first picture is the largest; he is a fish that is a "throwbac k" to the earlier stages of strain development. I call him "moose" because of his size and he is a very dark shade sometimes but always with that black rim. I like his appearance.

San Merahs do have bars, though they disappear sometimes according to their mood. As to the names, I think San Merahs are also called Red Covers by some breeders. I don't know if Rose Reds is also a name that some call San Merahs too? Perhaps Al or someone else can help out on this...

To me i think its a grading thing
In my opinion:
San merah =no bars
Red rose= bars
Red cover= chinese version of san merah
Am i close

I've been told by several overseas breeders that juvenile San Merahs are barred... and as they mature many will lose their bars... but some faintly retain them. I will have to accept that and explain it as such as I have not ever bred them to see what they are hatched as.

I have several adult red covers here from wayneNg that show a range of appearence of the bars...from faint to not all.

Rose red adults are always Barred.

Thats my interpretation...if anyone has photos of juvenile San Merah or Red covers with the parents..I'd love to see them.

thanks,
al
