Can someone refresh my memory on smaller tankmates for Discus?

I posted this in the newbie section, because this seems like such a dumb question. I bought 10 platies and 9 rummies to complete my schools that didn't have have enough for school. Right now they are in QT.

Something that I don't remember about these smaller fish is that god awful fish smell. My 100 gal doesn't smell fishy at all, in fact it seems like normal clean water, but I'm stocked very light.

I feel dumb asking this but why does my QT smell like fish?

Small tank...overcrowded...bacteria buildup. Also, check your Ammonia level, make sure it is cycled. Are you doing plenty of WC's to keep the detritus low?

I checked all the levels and they are at zero, the fish went in smelling that bad, probably the LFS usual overcrowding. I did a 30% W/c. It's been over a year since I've bought fish from a LFS, lately I've used breeders or Live Aquaria.com.
