Last week I went to Koi America in Westminster MD. Before I went to the show site I made arrangements with Peter Thode to drop into the hatchery...........WOW. I've never been much for the smartie colours in discus but these fish were knock outs.

There are two main rooms with 150 tanks over all, each on a central system. There are cement vats that act as holding tanks, and grow out tanks. The sump tank for the sand filter and TT has odd ball discus in it…fry that got swept into the system and left on their own.

He does breed some angels but the one he’s working with are platinum’s…no bars and a metallic sheen. Then there was an albino LF pleco, but Peter used another name for it.

Sorry I can't remember the name varieties, I also have a few more pics

Holy Cow...that plec lurking in the bottom left corner of the last pic is HUGE! Discus leftover must agree with him ;-)

I really liked those leopards. And of course I wish I had some more Albino Longfin Bushynose plecs! Is he breeding those?

Thanks for sharing!

It's well worth the drive. He also has some F1 wilds, but the pic is all flash back.

kacey I have no more pics of the vats but here one of the TT for one of the systems and you can see the sand filter in the background

Thats odd. It's just taking forever to load the pics but I get all the text fine. Yesterday the pics loaded in seconds like they should. Go figure.

Hey Graham:

Nice pics! Haven't seen the old man in many years! Doesn't look like he's aged any since! Must be the water! :)

thanks,

Graham:

I visited Peter last week and picked 8 adults of various reds (tangerine, sunset and PBs) for my 180 plant tank. Nice Christmas present from the wife, huh?! I did not have my camera, so I have copied your pics for my "digital scrapbook", thanks!

All:

The visit was well worth the drive down from Philly where I was on a business trip. Anyone who is close by and loves discus should call and schedule a visit; you will not be disappointed! Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to talk-Peter is a wealth of history and tells a great story! And leave money and credit cards at home or I can guarantee you will leave with a lighter bank account/wallet unless your willpower is better than mine!

Did you pickup his huge ple*o? LOL looks like he can fit a discus in his mouth. Nice discus and pond.

I've bumped this back up as again this year I'll be going down to Baltimore/Westminster on Sept 10>15 for the Mid Atlantic Koi Clubs annual show. Anyone close should attend. there will be some amazing fish up to about 36''

I also get to go to Peter's again, except this time I'm buying. :D:D:):) I have no way to get fish directly back...dumb US airlines....so I've made arrangements with Peter for packing and delivery to friend, Gavin, at the koi show on Sunday who will drive them back up to his home in Ottawa on Sunday, about a 12 hour drive and then air cargo them out to me on Monday.....probably 30 hours in the box.

Now all I have to do is figure out which ones to buy:confused::confused::D
