So ~

My daughter asks me if I would have a problem if she drove down to LA ~ UCLA to be specific ~ to spend a few days with her...hell, I don't know what to call him anymore! Soon to be boyfriend...again...

He was just here a few days and ....don't even get me started....

But ~

She can not afford to fly as she checked all the rates ~ she knows to have a plan and a dayum good one ~ as she knows me...

5 hours...360 miles ~ driving alone....

Hell No!

She just turned 20 a few days ago ~ very responsible grown up and blah blah blah...you get the picture...

What do you think guys?

You have to let them grow up sooner or later....I'd be honest with her. Tell her your feelings about it and your concerns for her safety....Then let her make the decision.

Thank God I do not have a daughter. I would not let her go. As long as she lives in my house she goes by my rules...But that is just me...

Tough call.. at 20 she is an adult..and if you tell her no... you may make her think you have no faith or trust in her... or worse still.. push her away.

If she was away at college...would have any real say in who she spent time with and what she did?

BTW>.. my daughters 6 now..and I dread the day when I;m in your shoes..:(

Well ~ Al, she will go make no mistake about that ~ and I knew that! I wanted her to fly but then she will not have a car and you can't rent one til you are 25 ~ what is up with that? Dumb:mad:

I just worry someone latching on and following her.....happens all the time ~ even a trip to Walmart you can disappear:mad:

I so thought of pulling that one, Dan! lol! It is my house, granted, but she puts a lot into it as well ~ physically, monetarily and whatever else.... airly!

Kids have a way of rebelling if you continously tell them no. They are going to one day make their own decisions and 20 years old is a time to let them (hopefully they are responsible and you have raised them correctly). That being said....I have a 19 year old daughter that lives in my house still and has a 1 a.m. curfew (my rule). 2 a.m. rolls around one night and she is not home......I personally went over to her friends house (that is a boy who lives with his parents still) and escorted her home. I woke up the mom and dad to let them know that I didnt apprecate them letting her sleep in their house into the early morning hours when she is supposed to be home, lol. I feel for ya! Mine is promply home at 1 am now. :D However, she used to have a long time boyfriend from high school and they were together for 2 years. He went away to Wyoming U and we let her go visit him a couple of times by herself (flight though) and she saved her money until she could afford it. Somewhere along the line, you will have to give them some room to grow and believe they are going to use common sense when making their own decisions. It wont always happen that way but that is the way we all learned. Good thing is...as parents, we will always be here to tell them "I told you so"...oops, I mean....."Its ok honey, everything will be fine" lol. Kids!!

Does she have a freind who wouldn't mind going away with her ? I have an 18 yr old daughter and I'm not sure if I would want her doing a 5hr drive on her own...Mmm...I would want someone with her..for so many reasons..fatigue,someone to share drive time with..and so many other reasons.
I totally understand where your comming from Marie.

well as a parent you always worry. i would also. my daughter just went on a trip from seattle to alaska.then bus back into canada then flew home. she went with a friend..but of course i told her..dont separate whatever...shes 22. all was good...but things go through your mind.
tell her lock the doors..dont trust anyone..not a nice world when you always wonder..what motives are.

Hey Marie.......She'll be fine!! And Good For You in Trusting her.

My best friend and I used to fly all over the place..up to and including Mexico once or twice...we always made it home...and we were 14 and 16!! lol Ten foot tall and bullet proof too! ;)

just fyi as well..the car rental thing at 25 has to do with insurance reasons...I guess after that age the price drops a little to make it worthwhile to the rental people.

take care and have fun!

Hi Marie.. Fires down here in SOCal are far from being under control. I would ask your daughter to reconsider. Here in San Diego it's down right frightening. We have our car packed with our belongings and are ready to move at a moments notice. Earlier this morning I saw one fire about two miles away on a mountain top. Later in the afternoon there was one tree that got torched just down the street from me. My work place shutdown and will be closed tomm. too that's how bad it is.

If the conditions don't let up by the time your daughter is scheduled to drive down, I"d say schedule another trip.
