Can I switch off my bio-filter?

How long can I switch off my bio-filter in a day without causing damage to the bacterial cycle?

1st question ......Why?

As long as it's well established and not submerged in water then it can stay off for days with little affect on it, as long as it stay wet. Submerged media runs out of O2 quickly and will die off
