The main reason that fish die when out of water is that the gill lamellae collapse, preventing gas exchange. All fish are quite capable of breathing air if they can keep thier gills wet and not compacted.

Fish like the killie and others keep some water in the gill area to keep the lamallae from collapsing onto each other.

G
