This is the time of the year where the Japanese harvest thier koi from the mud ponds, where they've all summer. They'll be moved into huge vats and raceways to be sold or culled depending on size.

I used to keep koi.
Until I downgraded the pond.

Never quite got the grading system though on what koi was good and made.

I think they like symetry and the more different types of colour the better?

Thinking of starting again :)

A number of things go into making a koi good...body confirmation is #1, #2 depth of colour, #3 start and finish of colour plates (kiwa and sashi), then pattern.

In most cases a red and white fish (kohaku) will win the highest prises.
