Can someone please advise me if l can keep a pair of blue rams in a planted tank with discus? The tank is 80 gallons and l'm only planning to keep 6 discus in it.

Yes, you can. They are compatible and many members have them in with their discus.

Hi again Marie, and fishmama. Thanks for your response. (marie that must have been me then?)
What wonderful photos....l'm already trying to think where l can set up more tanks in this place. I'm in the process of setting up a planted tank, my PH is sitting on 6 due to puming Co2 i think, and not sure what to do? Can any one please advise?

If it's stable at 6, I would leave it alone. That's a perfect pH for a planted tank.

Thanks for that. I'm pumping a home brew of co2 in there, and have been keeping an eye on it since l set the tank up about 3 weeks ago. I'm not in any hurry to put discus in there, but am eager to put discus friendly fish in there in the meantime, like 'Harliquins' 'Cardinals' and some 'Blue Rams'. Another concern l have is the most important thing OXYGEN. I'm not pumping any in at this stage 'cause l want my plants to kick off. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

just make sure you have plenty of surface agitation.

Hi 'LizStreithorst'. So, if my Cannister filter outlet is above water level, it will create enough oxygen mixing with the water at the surface to substain fish in a 80gl tank? Sounds good!

Its been a couple of months now since l put a pair of rams with my discus in a planted tank. I thought l might have had two males, as one was chasing the other around very aggresivley. It was confirmed that they were actually a pair on another thread. Last week l noticed that they were both coming into excellent condition. Surprise , surprise, look what l found them doing today. I suppose the conditions are just right for them, but don't know how long these eggs will last with Discus, Harliquins,Cardinels and bristle nose cat fish all sharing the same tank. If they are protective enough, thay may keep the other fish from eating their eggs?:noway:

How exciting, Joe!! I remember when I found Ram eggs in my tank, the only time I found Ram eggs in my tank, I thought someone had sprinkled salt on top of the terracotta cave!

Good Luck!:)

You're funny:D

Do you think they have any chance to hatch?

No....I hestitate to think they could pull it off in a community tank....:(

Having said that ~

I know nothing about breeding Rams! Nada. Zip.

What you might want to consider is their own little breeding tank if you are really serious, Joe ~ I hear they are really easy to raise:D

Do it!

For us both!:D:D

I'm so tempted...... So much happenening at the moment. I've only recently gone from one tank to two...but there's always room for one more.I think l might try setting up a smallish 10 gal tank and transfer eggs only, if they spawn again that is. I don't know anything about actually breeding fish, but eager to learn.

I'm surprised that all the eggs are still there. The male is doing a good job l think. He also chases the female away as well:confused:
90% of the eggs have turned white. Would they be the good eggs or bad eggs? I would imagine that if they were bad, the male would have picked them off.
I read somewhere that they usually take about 60 hours to hatch, so i'm hopeing tto see some wigglers tommorow night. Fingers crossed.

The white eggs are the ones that have fungused or didn't fertilize. Hopefully, you get something out of it just to see how good a parents they are. I'm getting my breeder tank ready to see if my pair want to give it a go again. :D

Hi Jose. Its all over red rover. all the eggs are gone now. They all ended up white, and eaten up. It was very interesting watching it all, and hope that one day l will have a go at breeding them, but for now l just want to consentrate on raising my two lots of discus. I wish you all the best of luck with your rams....and your discus too of coarse!

I have kept rams & discus too. Right now I have four wild rams, 11 discus, a few plecs, and some sterbai cories in my 150. Everyone gets along great!
