I started a fishless cycle today. After adding the ammonia, I noticed it has surfactants in it. I could have sworn I checked it out when I bought it. I even went to two different places to find it. What effect will the surfactants have? Can I just use the proper ammonia in the future? Should I drain the tank and start over?

Yes, you need to drain the tank and start all over. One note: do not clean this tank out with bleach after draining it out. Ammonia and bleach form ammonium chloride which is toxic and extremely deadly.

Go to an Ace hardware store and you'll find the "janitorial" strength ammonia with no surfactants. It will say 10% ammonium hydroxide and will be the only ingredient.

Thats what I did. The Ace hardware "janitorial" strength ammonia doesn't list the ingrediants but I got it anyway. Thanks
