View Full Version : Breeding & Mucus production depending on discus Strain

We all know discus need mucus for the fry to be able to eat off the parents. I have surrogated several times successfully. If parent hold onto the babies for at least 3 days, their good as gold.

Blue strains seems to create mucus at will, pigeon, marlboro strains less so, LSS & Leopards even less. We all set up the tanks the same way, ph around 5.5, hardness 100-150.

The question..........do different strains, as stated above, require water, temperature or? difference to generate successful egg hatching and mucus generation?

Even the barometric pressure comes into play with successful breeding.
Appreciate the help in answering this specific inquiry above.

Thanks,

Jim

I have a RT and PB pair and although my PB male never turned dark he seemed to still have enough slime coat to feed the fry.
Granted the fry did feed of the female most of the time as she was almost black and the fry seemed more attracted to her.
My tank is at 6.5 PH and a DH around 50-60. Not sure if this helps.....just my experiance?

I have kept discus for 15 years off and on and this is my first shot at breeding so I'm by no means an expert. I'm sure more knowledgable folks will post.

Thanks for the post. I provide "quiet" zones for my discus in their 29 or 20 gallon tanks. Using sponge filters and whisper filters. The females part is easy, its the male you have to "turn on" . The strange part is that in the same water parameters you can have a brood that is 90% successful or 98% unsuccessful with only a couple of wigglers. Viagra for the male discus!

Some breeders use mucus producer, especially on light color Discus.

My pair is in my living room right next to the piano where my 8 yr old practices ! I too use a sponge filter and power filter. I turn off the power filter when they start to make goo goo eyes at each other and don't turn it back on till I remove the fry. Yes Viagra for Discus would be helpful. I have an awsome RT male that just does not get along with my RT female. They have spawned several times and never get a single wiggler. Maybe he's a she ?
Same female with the BP and they would have wigglers ever 6 days if I let them :)
