QT Tanks and Ammonia

Do I need to worry about ammonia spikes in a 10gal QT tank running w/ a sponge filter only? Will the sponge filter alone keep down?

If the sponge is cycled and you feed the bacteria it should be fine, as long as the amount of food for the bacteria remains stable.
