An article about this book.

Trophy Discus: The art of selecting, grooming and showing discus.

The idea for this book came just after the Tetra World Discus Competition, in November 2006. From a judges’ perspective, we felt that there was a lack of some important ingredients which were hindering the possibility of having a true Trophy Discus in local and overseas discus competitions.

We felt that it was time to come up with a book which would help Discus hobbyists/breeders discover and understand the genetics of this champion fish. By doing this, we hoped that these enthusiasts would be able to successfully select, groom and eventually show a discus worthy of being a Trophy Discus.

The main essence is to show your discus, to win the ultimate price – the Trophy!
Hence the emphasis we have placed are:

1) Discus classes …we are aware that many discus are selected to be in the wrong classes in discus competitions. We wanted to have an informative book to advise you of the characteristics for each class so that you too can appreciate how the fishes are judged

2) We want a book to display the pictures of the latest strains of discus and some of common ‘market’ names of discus are deliberately given for references.

3) The chapter on selecting show-quality discus, and judging criteria to inform you on the variety of ways to show their discus in the best possible way.

4) Many of us want to show our own achievement in breeding. Hence, we have a chapter on Discus genetics, as well as, a chapter on ways to improve on established strains.

5) The chapter on Parade of Champions is to show you the pictures of past Champion discus, so that hobbyists have knowledge of the benchmark of selection.

6) The Chapter on Planted Discus Tanks and Environment was written to give our hobbyists the knowledge of the environment required and the plants that are compatible and ideal for use in the Planted Aquarium.

7) Some of us failed miserably when raising young fry, especially when the parents refuse to carry them. The chapter on Artificial Raising of Discus Fry is D ick’s speciality. Here he gives you his winning formula.

This book is co-authored by D ick Au (USA), Dr Francesco Denitto (Italy), and Dr Sun See Seng (Singapore) and published by Cichlid Press.

Cheers
Francis

I enjoyed the book very much and is one that I actually read all the way through in one sitting!
