I use Laterite........kind of messy.......an orange cloud when you move a pot around. Is flourite better?

You should always rinse substrate before putting it in but no, I get a cloud too....its just brownish though. Dont know if it is any better.

Hi Flourite = Laterite (basically same stuff, hard baked clay containing lots of mirerals and Iron).

I also put a small layre of filter-floss in the pot, and mix 50/50 laterite and inert pea gravel.

Over time, when leaves show signs of difficiencies, add plant tabs or fert sticks.

I just used plain gravel and my plants grew like crazy, never put any plant tabs in either. Got rid of the potteds though, because I found the pots were accumulating too much detritus. I used to vacuum them, but then thought it ridiculous, I got rid of my gravel bed to keep things cleaner, now here I am vacuuming pots! Now I just have BB with a large driftwood centerpiece. I may attach some plants to the driftwood.

I use peat moss and cover with either gravel or sand. Throw in a fert stick and good to go.

I use Flourite - some laterite clay balls (like the old Dupla ones) aren't baked and will turn muddy in the water (you're not supposed to transplant the plant if you use these), but Flourite won't make as much of a mess and also won't affect pH (although Seachem's Onyx might).

Hope that helps.
