What would be the ideal setup for 5-6 juvies? I know bare bottom but besides that - what size tank, what kind of filter (I have a penguin 350, would that work? I know most people use sponge filters) Would a 29 gallon be ok? At what point do you move them to a bigger tank?
Thanks

I started setting up 29 gallon tanks for my juvenile discus and soon after putting them in the tank learned that was too small . I started with about six juveniles. I sold the 29 tanks and set up 75 gallon tanks and used aquaclear 110 filters with two hydro sponges .
Hopes this helps,
roberto.

A 75G would be great for 4-5 juvies, but a 55G will work just fine with a couple of hydro sponges and a AC 110.

I wouldn't put them into a small tank knowing you will just have to move them again. Give them plenty of room from the beginning knowing that you will be able to grow them out just fine from the start.

The penquin should work fine as long as you put a couple of sponge filtes in there. They are cheap anyways.

Personally I like the 40 breeder tank better than the 55 gallon tanks...with the 40 breeder you get more width since it has the same foot print as a 75 gallon tank...additionally when full it holds 48 gallons of water. Your Juvies can go right into the 40 and with only 5-6 with good water changes can mature in that tank...

My 40 breeders are 36X18 and my 75's are 48X18.

I've got my Challenge juvies in a 40 breeder. They've got plenty of room to stretch their fins in there. It's 36x18.

I am using a 55 gal w/6juvies, and a 40gal breeder w/7 juvies. It seems the juvies in the 55 r growing faster than the ones in the 40 gal. It is a different strain tho, i don't no if that makes a diff.

I honestly feel 55 gl. and 75 gl. are great for growing out juvies.. I use 90 gls. because I love the depth.. The penguin 350 would be great. Put some sponge material in there and use a prefilter on the intake. Also you really need hydro style sponge filters in the barebottom tank.. Hydro 4 or Hydro 5.. I know from trial and era, years of trying :9) David

Dispanhands, Your are right...one foot longer...I mis-communicated what I was talking about...It won't be the last time...:D

Elieen, If you want to run a test you need to run a control on the same strain...Since you have both thanks it may not be a bad idea next time you get some new juvies...;)

David, trust me if I had the room and the $$$ my entire fish room would be 75's and 90's...;) I just managed with the 40's since I have a central system and do daily WC...A little more work but heck for $50 per tank compared to $110 -$150 who can beat that...:D
