Hi

I am here again to ask some silly questions. Thanks for your help though.

1) My BD pair always spawned with 90% even 100% white eggs. What could be the reasons? Infertile? Water condition? Age of the male? Quality of the eggs?

2) My F/F pair laid their eggs three times/two weeks. I am trying to stop them laying eggs right now because I want them to grow bigger instead. I also noticed that the eggs were white the time they produce them and some eggs are non-sticky. What could be the probable cause? The temp is quite high and I do WC every other day.

Although I only want them to breed once(task not accomplished) but I still want to know what is wrong with my way of keeping fish?
Thanks for your help!

Its mostly about the water parameters. It also depends on the maturity level of the male and his ability to fertilize. Current in the tank also affects fertilization. Do some tests on your pH, kH an gH. Black cones are not something I would use because they would attract the fry. It may hurt the chances of them attaching to the parents. All light colors.

Thanks Mikscus:

What are the easiest methods to measure GH and KH. Does everyone has GH/PH/KH monitors? I have one cheap PH meter which is on for almost two/there years. I turn it on 2/3 years ago and never turn it off again but I never watch the numbers. Am I too lazy?:p I doubt its accuracy.

It's about 24 hours and the two females still guarding the eggs. They are quite responsible and take turns eating. What can I say!:o At least I know they could be good mothers when they have the chance.

How long does it take for infertile eggs to turn white? Can I just add a male in the tank to split them?

P.s. Does the female has hole-in-head disease?

Pic at 24 hours: Some infertile eggs remain clear but most of them turn white.

Get yourself a liquid test kit at the lfs that tests for pH, gH and kH. You should also be checking Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates. If you suspect HITH, up the quality of your water. Large w/c's every day for the breeders. You may be doing nothing wrong at this point as far as keeping them. It could be a young male not able to fertilize yet. Do you know for sure that you have a male? Patience is the key here. Let them practice for a couple months and make sure your water is in the range for breeding and see what happens. Eggs will all turn white within 24-48 hours. You will know that you have good eggs in 72 hours because they will be dark.
